very good

(5 out of 5) by D. Mcdermott on Apr 25, 2008 (Ireland)
I've been using these speakers for about six weeks now having bought them without really planning to, but my old Harmon Kardon's were on their last legs and I saw these at a good price. I've been really happy with their performance, so was very surprised when I clicked in here and saw only one previous review - and a one-star review at that! Well each to their own I suppose...

I bought these primarily for use with DVDs, though I listen to a lot of music on them too. The subwoofer is terrific, really powerful and gives a depth to the film watching experience that my old speakers couldn't provide, good as they were. I've seen from reviews of the X-230 that turning the subwoofer's volume down all the way does not completely cut out the sound, that has been rectified here, the sound cuts out from the subwoofer once its volume control is turned down all the way on the X-240.

Sound from the satellites is very clear too giving an all-round sound that I've been extremely pleased with. As far as music goes I've had no significant problems while using the speakers with a wide range (at least I think so) of music, from Brian Eno to Mozart to Radiohead to Rage Against The Machine, it's all come out crisp and clear. Obviously different types of music will need differing levels of bass, but that's what the volume control on the subwoofer is there for...

There is of course some loss in the mid-range, but nothing that would have most people tearing their hair out, and this is par for the course on 2.1 speakers and particularly in this price range. If you are thinking of buying a set of budget speakers mainly to listen to music I would imagine you're better off forgetting about a subwoofer and going for the Creative T20 or T40.

Also, like a lot of speakers they sound much better after being broken in. The sound out of the box was quite decent, but improved noticeably after a couple of days of fairly heavy use. There may well be better speakers out there at this price, I don't know because I haven't tried any others, all I can say is I have been very happy with the X-240.

Oh and the so-called 'stow-away cradle' for your MP3 player is utter rubbish and went straight where all rubbish should go, the bin. But the speakers are still good.

Good for the money but....

(3 out of 5) by J. Lester on Oct 30, 2008 (London, UK)
I've just bought the X-240 speakers and the design is excellent. I love the cute little satellites, they're well angled to point directly to you.

If you like your music SERIOUSLY bass heavy, then these are a good buy. I have the sub set to about 25% and in loud paced music it's still too "thud" rather than "music". Basically, it's a GREAT kick-drum, but bass guitar is poor.

I've just had to replace my Harman Kardon Soundsticks (and coz I'm feeling poor, I didn't want to replace the £129 speakers at the same price). I saw a good few reviews for the X-240 and I guess for the money, they're a good deal. Anyone who tries to persuade you these are "HiFi" needs to be led into the street and put out of your and everyone else's misery. The sound is cloudy at best - there is very little clarity. It's kinda like over-hearing someone else's headphones.

The Logitech site claims frequency response of 40Hz-20kHz. The Sub feels like it's going lower than that, and although I can't prove, I doubt the speakers have any tonal power at 20kHz. They might be able to get there, but they're soooo quiet you'd never hear it over the midrange.

Gaming improves a bit because most of the noise is mid-low range. I am currently trying to figure out the wiring loom from my old SoundSticks as only the bass died and if I can get my old satellites working with my new Logitech Sub, then I reckon I could be on to a winner.

Overall - they're good for the money, but if you actually LISTEN to your music then spend an extra £20-30 and get something that much better.

Ooh, and to further everyone else's sentiment - the MP3 holder is rubbish. I'd rather blu-tack my iPod to my desk than use that cradle. You will have to provide the USB interface and dock cable to get this to work. The volume controller will allow you to play your MP3 player through the speakers but will not charge it. You will need to connect the Sync cable for this.

A very poor Logitech speaker

(1 out of 5) by Artic Monkey on Feb 29, 2008 (UK)
Firstly I'd like to say I wished I bought these from Amazon as they are a lot cheaper than a certain catalogue I'm bought them from. That was the first of my very bad decisions.....Buying these at all was the second bad decision and by far the worst decision! These speakers are awful - the sound quality is lacklustre - the bass has the tendency to vibrate and overpower the high frequencies on the satellites. I tried them on several different types of music and it made no difference. Very disappointing. The MP3 docking station pictured here is a joke - its basically just a plastic MP3 shelf...!! I returned these 24 hours later and got a refund and bought the Creative T3100 set instead (see my review on Amazon). They are miles better, sound fantastic and I gave them 5 stars . Buy those and steer well clear of these.

THIS DOES NOT HAVE AN IPOD DOCK

(2 out of 5) by K. Farrag on Dec 12, 2008 (London, UK)
Please do not be fooled, I bought this believing it had an iPod/iPhone dock that would let you use it independantly of your PC. All it has is a flimsy pull out shelf which holds the Ipod in place, you then have to manually connect a wire from the headphone jack to the mic-in on the dock, and if you want to charge it on the the so called dock you need to use your own cable.

Had I known this I would not have purchased this, I would have gone for dedicated speakers rather than this rubbish hybrid.

Good value well made

(5 out of 5) by A. McQuiston on Jan 6, 2009 (UK)
Bought these for £24.00 and am very impressed by the quality.Ok maybe not up to HiFi standard but for pc speakers they do a great job. Read other negative reports about the MP3 shelf, fair point it is a little flimsy but once my Ipod was plugged in I had no problems. The sub-woofer is very easily to adjust and gives a good bass sound. All in all I would give this product the thumbs up!
