calm down dear

(2 out of 5) by wiggy on Mar 31, 2009 (Ipswich)
Don't have small children or sensitive pets, and preferably do have a deaf spouse, with this one. My missus has learnt some new words since we bought this machine, which I call The Freezer. Though it does what it says on the box - when it's in the mood - it also spends about half its time in "frozen" mode, when it will not respond to any control whatsoever. It means a trip under the table every time to switch off/on at the mains, not very jolly when you're half-way through transferring a movie, playing a disc or recording a TV documentary etc. I've moved it to an easier plug socket, passing an outside window on the way...oh yes, I was tempted. Seriously it's no fun leaving it to do something and coming home with the red light flashing on first base. On average, it freezes up about twice a week, but as always usually at critical moments. In fairness, image quality is excellent, but it'll have to go soon anyway because of HD/Digital. It's done a lot of work, but we've repainted the lounge blue to match the air. Hopefully this is just my experience, but I see that another review mentions the freezing. Anybody want 300 VHS tapes?

I am so pleased that i purchased this product. It is so easy to work and the manual simple to read. I am a little over 50!! and not the best when it comes to technical products but I managed to connect it up and get it working all by my little self which my family thought was amazing!! So thankyou Philips and also to Amazon for their Excellent service.

philips combi

(2 out of 5) by Mrs. Maureen Larkin on Feb 10, 2009 (uk)
this dvd/vhs combi is not as easy to use as my toshiba combi that unfortunately broke beyond repair and is no longer available. i could not install the philips myself as i could my toshiba, no matter what i did it wouldn't work and ended up having to pay someone to do it for me and even now it sometimes scrambles itself and i have to reset it. if the machine thinks its been on pause to long it freezes and i have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it working again. if i press stop instead to prevent this happening both video and dvd end up back at the beginning and i have to spend time searching for where i stopped it not very convenient. it does as it says and one touch button records video to dvd which is ok if you don't wish to cut anything out of the video, which i do, so not good. when in play mode the info display will not stay on screen for more than a few seconds, which can sometimes be a nuicance. which recomended this as a best buy but my toshiba was much better, beggers can't be choosers though and its not easy to get a combi any more, so i suppose its better than nothing.

Good piece of kit

(5 out of 5) by bugsbernie on Feb 1, 2009 (UK)
Spent a lot of time researching a product that would transfer VHS to DVD (and the reverse) as well as record Camcorder footage and settled for the Philips. The Philips does the job well. Once I got used to the time-lag between pressing a command and it happening I found the recorder easy to use and after a few attempts can use it without the crib sheet. One of the main issues for me is noise - I find the recorder relatively and acceptably quiet. Delighted with the results and have now caught up on all my old VHS tapes. I also use DVD-RW discs to add ongoing footage of the granchildren - just as easy as VHS tape but better quality altogether.

Great if you are looking for a DVD recorder and a VCR.

(5 out of 5) by Chunky Wilberforce on Jan 16, 2009 (UK)
I bought one of these as my old VCR had conked out and the dvd player came out in sympathy. Getting a combined unit was the natural choice, and the ability to convert VHS to DVD was an added bonus.

I see people have been asking for specs. Knock yourself out:
