Poor Mans iPod

Sep 6, 2007 - By D. Gallacher (Manchester, England, UK)

I call mine a poor mans iPod, but that doesn't mean it lacks in quality at all.

For £50 it is an amazing little gadget. It is basically an iPod duplicate, just with a different interface. Just like an iPod, the screen makes it very easy to scroll through different artists, genres or albums to find a song.

Also, like an iPod, the screen can be used to play videos and view pictures, which can be easily converted and written to the device by a program which comes on a CD which is included with the player. It doesn't support all video files, but for me it has so far supported .avi and .wmv.

However, unlike an iPod, it has a built in radio and microphone for recording whatever you like, whenever.

It has an internal battery and needs to be charged through USB like an iPod (in case you were wondering).

The 2GB isn't really a lot compared to other players, but for the price, and along with the features it is excellent. You can actually store a whole feature length film on this, and still have room for about 500 songs, so thats not bad. The screen is a bit small for watching a film on, but an easy watching programme is ideal for waiting for the bus, for example (Family Guy for me...).

Bottom line is, if you want something that can play videos and music and, buy an iPod. If you want this but are on a tight budget, this Philips player is an absolute must have.

Excellent Value

Nov 22, 2007 - By Christopher Dean (Swansea, Wales)

I've had my Philips SA3124/02 MP3 player now for about 2 months and it's superb.

It's very easy to use, with the menu system being one of the best I've seen. You can randomize your playlist or play tracks in order.

The graphic equalizer lets you chose from a number of settings.
Transferring music is simple and can be done using Windows Media Player or you can just drag and drop the music files.

It has a 2GB memory which is good for about 500 tracks.

The sound is good, although the supplied bud headphones aren't the best so I invested in some better ones (makes a big difference). The unit charges via the USB connector and the battery lasts 10 hours plus.

The screen is okay for watching films and will deal with widescreen.

A+ would definitely recommend.

Don't be fooled by the i-Pod, they are expensive and you have to deal with i-Tunes which is a nightmare.

for the price - great

Oct 24, 2007 - By Jill Back (UK)

I am very pleased with the Philips player - the sound it great - although I did decide to invest in Bose headphones in the end which naturally make the world of difference, but better to do that than spend a fortune on a player that you may be disappointed in, the headphones make it. the radio sounds brilliant - although the reception will vary as you move around which is only to be expected.
Wish I could work out how to delete the songs I am fed up with though - I shall persevere - there must be a way.
