Fab bit of kit

(5 out of 5) by Sean O'Brien on Apr 20, 2008 (Tredegar, Wales)
Improves the quality of MP3's via your pc dramatically. Has headphone and line-out outputs. Can also be used without PC to improve the quality of i-pod or other MP3 player but does require additional power supply for this purpose. I am a bit of an audiophile and am very impressed with this. Even better as I bought it on sale in PC world for £19.99! If you aspire to hi-fi quality from MP3's, then this goes some way to achieving that goal.

When it's good, it's really good. Otherwise it's just worth turning off.

I bought this mainly as the sound card on my laptop had broken, and it seemed as reasonably priced as it would be to get a new internal one with installation costs. So in respect of that is works a treat, just plugs into the USB and sits nicely on the desk.

The bonus being the Creative "x-fi crystalizer" and "x-fi cmss-3d" functions. After 2 days of listening to music and a film, it's become obvious that rather than just turn these on and let them play, it takes a lot of changing around every song. I'm not sure whether this is due to differences in mp3 quality or source, but some even with the functions on minimum are unlistenable due to the clicks and distortion caused by the effects; luckily it's just a flick of a switch to turn the functions off. But watching a film, and some songs are drastically improved. It's also cool that the functions can be changed in intensity (although the only way you can see what level it is on is by the speed the LCD flashes, and I've not found a time that the top level doesn't distort the hell out of anything).

The use-ability of the device is excellent, with the top-half of the much-thinner-than-expected device pressing down to change choice of volume or the 2 functions, the latter of which are also switched on by a seperate switch but can be previewed by selecting.

It has not only saved me a new internal sound card, but has provided a much better sound than most in it's price range could provide. I use it through a 2-channel midi hi-fi, and it works a treat. Oh, the miniUSB input (also for charging - but charger sold seperately) for and 3mm jack output are very close, so be careful if using large wires.

Quality bit of kit.

As a musician and music lover, this product really does it's job. I spent hours checking out reviews of this and other external soundcards. I took a gamble on this one as it was a bit more expensive than the others ... believe me, it's worth every penny.

Just by plugging the thing in without any fine tuning the sound is improved ten fold. There are so many differnt ways you can make your favourite tunes sound.

Pay the extra cash, as the box says, your music collection deserves it.
