Great camera - impressive video capacity

(5 out of 5) by Si Raja Iwan Fals on May 22, 2008 (USA)
Great little camera this, especially for the price.

Takes generally decent clear sharp photos, most impressive for me was the surprisingly good video it gives - not limited to 30 seconds like many cameras (it goes as long as you want in fact: 30 minutes on a 2GB card) and in quite amazing quality for such a little thing...

All fairly idiot-proof too which is handy.

Impressive quality pictures, easy to use, excellent!!!

My kodak easyshare died on me a week before my best friends wedding, I purchased my old digital camera through Amazon so I came straight to Amazon, I was initially searching for a kodak as I am quite basic with technical equipment and wanted a good quality camera with good photo's and easy to use. I searched for ages and then found this on top 10 sellers, I read all the customer reviews and thought wow seems brilliant, but I kept thinking about the kodak easyshare and how I knew how to use it, would I have time to learn a new camera in time for my friends big day.... well I decided to take a chance, I ordered it and 24 hours later it was in my sitting room. I charged it and then spent half and hour scanning the instruction book and had a play.

For someone who is not very quick with picking new things up easy well I was taking pictures of the cat and even took a video same day as getting it, I love it, I would recommend this camera to anyone. It is very easy to use, the photo quality is exeptional, the anti shake option is great especially when taking pictures of people moving or dancing etc and the flash on/off option is great as it takes 2 photos of the same image and then shows you a preview and that is a really clever idea. You can't zoom on the video which I am used to but I didnt feel I missed out on my video footage and on my old camera when I did zoom on video you could hear the zoom operating which was always annoying.

Buy one you won't be dissapointed

Very, Very Poor

(1 out of 5) by M. Barrett on Dec 17, 2007 (UK)
I am extremely disappointed with my F40fd. I bought it via Amazon from PurelyGadgets, and it has spent more time with them than it has with me. The on/off switch failed after a few weeks and took months to repair. When the camera came back it lasted a week before both the autofocus and the lens motor both failed. To add insult to injury, the supplier is one of those dreadful enterprises which expects you to believe that their returns department has no access to phones, so you end up with an endless series of bland and meaningless e-mails telling you nothing.

Avoid both camera and supplier. I expected more of both Fuji and of Amazon.

Oh dear... what a terrible camera!

(1 out of 5) by W. A. Watson on Sep 22, 2007 (UK)
I'm a keen diver and when I accidently flooded my old Sony Cybershot following an early morning start a few weeks back it was time to get a new camera. I was very happy with the old Cybershot but for the lack of a manual white balance, which is very useful for underwater photography. Alas, none of the current line up of Sony cameras have this feature so I was looking for something else.

After doing a bit of research I ended up getting the F40fd: I had to get it in a bit of a rush because I was off to Malta for a diving holiday. The holiday was great but when I got home again and managed to look at the photos on the PC I was really disappointed with the quality of them. They were OK, and only OK, at a regular size. As soon as I went to view them at actual pixel size the noise and grain was terrible! With the Cybershot I've gotten used to crisp sharp images which is something that was patently lacking. To be honest my camera phone is better than this, albeit without a zoom and only 3mp.

Convinced I'd ended up with something that demonstrating below standard performance (I work a company that produces electronic consumer and I'm all too aware that occasionally duff units are produced) I got in touch with Fuji support who asked me to send some sample photos. I was then told that they were of expected quality for the settings used and that as the camera had a potentially high ISO setting that was probably what was causing the noise. As one of them had been taken on glorious Mediterranean summer day on the full auto setting whilst propped on a wall using the timer I fail to how this would be relevant but this didn't seem to matter. I then sent it back to Fuji for them to check it and got the same response: the camera is acting according to spec.

OK, if it's according to spec then it's a rubbish (for want of a better word) camera. To be honest if this is anything to go by I have severe doubts over any Fujifilm camera! Now I've got to work out what to do with this obvious lemon I've been sold. Next time I'll be trying before I buy, it's just a shame I've got a £140 underwater housing for the damn thing to get rid of as well.

My advice, if you haven't worked it out by now, is steer well clear. Me? Well, I'm tempted to go back to Sony. OK so there's no manual white balance but it least the spec it works to is good, unlike this junk.

Delighted with this little beauty

(5 out of 5) by Carrie H on Jul 31, 2008 (UK)
I wanted to replace my aging Exilim camera from 2003, and strangely although that camera was expensive at the time and had good write-ups, I was never particularly happy with it, especially when trying to do close-up shots. Before the Exilim, I had previously had a Fuji digital camera and remember I had been very happy with that, so I looked around at various reviews for the current Fuji compact cameras and came across this one.

I am delighted with this little beauty! I am no real photographer, preferring "point and shoot" simplicity, but this camera really does encourage you to go that one step further and makes it so easy to set up your own preferences for each shot. It even has a menu for different shot descriptions, such as Flower, Party, Underwater, Beach. Also panoramic or portrait settings. It is also very easy to adjust the ISO and picture sizing if you so require. It also has a very useful setting wherein you can ask it to take 2 shots one after the other - one with flash and one without - to see which you prefer. I haven't explored it fully yet, but so far I am very pleased with the quality of the photographs.

A cracking little camera at a great price!
