Awesome value for money
Bought this to replace my solid steel ixus v3 which is 5yrs old. Indestructible but the age shows in the image detail.
The fuji is a giveaway at this price, it has by far the largest sensor of any similar (and much larger compacts) which means low noise, good low light performance vivid detail and colour. It also has a fujichrome mode that simulate the old premium fuji 35mm film and give great colour and contrast. The screen is the same size and resolution as my nikon d40 dSLR and has a stunningly high refresh rate with good brightness.
I am certain the people on the internet moaning about the noise and poor image quality are using the rubbish auto modes that crank the up the ISO to silly levels. At 400 the fuji will blow away any compacts from other makes. Stick to the semi-manual mode and set your own ISO and the results are fantastic from such a small camera.
You get real-time shutter speed and aperture info on the display but stupidly you cannot set them manually - this feature would make the camera outstanding. The menu system is also a bit naff compared to canon and nikon and no histogram either.
White balance options are much better than average too with x3 fluorescent settings. Haven't tried the face-detection but surely the photographer is capable of that?
Build quality very decent and also has built in IR communication for wireless image transfer if your laptop has it. Takes SD cards so don't have to buy overpriced and inconvenient XD. mini USB socket is non-standard which is slightly annoying but obviously cable is included and SD card slots are everywhere these days. Batt charger is nice and compact.
I would not be disappointed had I spent twice the money on this, go and get one now before they sell out.

Quite the best camera I've had
I did a lot of searching and ended up buying this Fuji. The picture quality is absolutely cracking - the operation is quick and the LCD bright. For this price, you really can't get anything better.

Not much at all wrong
For the money this is very good - the only real gripe is purple fringing (as others have mentioned in back lit trees especially). I especially like the abilty to shoot two shots with and without the flash automatically, this is very handy when you are not sure. Low light abilty is exceptional although an image stabiliser would be useful (both my other cameras have them so I am spoilt in this respect).

Great in low light but not so great when the suns up.
I bought this in US as an upgrade to my samsung l700. The main reason was it was cheaper over there (just over £100) and I wanted something that could take could low light shots in New York.
For a compact the shots in low light are very good. Set the ISO to max 400 in manual mode (forget the low light mode), take care to hold it steady and the shots look great.
However the daytime shots are poor. The colours unatural, not that sharp and considerably worse than the camera I upgraded from. I tried various settings but doesn't seem to make a difference. You can tell the difference though when you compare results with my old samsung. As soon as I switched cameras the colours look worse, the contrast becomes too high and the shots are just not as well exposed.
I also think that Fuji is being rather silly with custom modes. The low light mode selects ISO 2000 which is really noisy. The camera's more than good enough at 400-800 to get a crisp shot so this is rather stupid as the night mode is useless for its intended purpose yet the cameras normal mode isn't. Likewise the stabliser only works at ISO2000 also. Noise is low below 800 but 1600 and 2000 are to be avoided. This makes these modes useless.
Build and performance seem first rate but this one's gonna have to go on ebay. I really do not like the quality of the images produced, and for the meanwhile I'll keep the samsung.
Overall very disappointing and not as good as the vastly cheaper (£85 new in the highstreet) samsung l700.

BRILLIANT! WONDERFUL QUALITY PICS!!!!!
i got the finepix f40 fd for my birthday and was amazed at the quality of the photos. as soon as i opened the box i thought the camera must have cost around £200-£300 because i previously owned the kodak c875 which despite it having many great features such as a 5xoptical zoom and 8.1mp quality pics, turned out to be discraceful and my holiday pictures in 2007 were horrible and dark. however the finepix f40 fd will give me superb holiday pics for my holiday this august 2008 and i am already snapping away! whatever you decide, BUY THIS CAMERA, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE CAMERA IS SOME PEOPLE EXPECT FAR TOO MUCH DESPITE IT HAVING EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR!!!!!! HOPE THIS HELPED U . JJ...
