Fairly good

(3 out of 5) by K. Helsdon on Nov 12, 2009 (UK)
First time using NR headphones.

Slightly disappointed with these headphones but I'm using them quite a bit on the tube & train. There is a fair amount of hiss on the headphones & why the volume changes when you turn them on I dont know. They do reduce some but not all of course of the background noise while on the train. So overall it's better with them on but don't expect miracles!

They should have put a volume control on the clip, another thing is I keep forgetting to turn off the power, why not just have them turn off after 10mins if there's no sound being processed, stupid flaw.

Review of SONY MDRNC22 headphones

I am very happy with these headphones. They fit very snugly, and as a result almost all background noise is lost without switching on the noise reduction. But I am expecting that the noise reduction will be important when I use the headphones on a flight, which I haven't done yet.

Bits keep falling off!

(2 out of 5) by Muzy on Jul 23, 2009
Well... I can see from the other reviews that lots of people like these earphones but I've just given up on mine. I got them for every day use not just for a flight. The sound is good and noise cancelling good but - I found the cable was way too long and constantly getting tangled up in my bag and pocket; the ear buds have two components, the sized bud that goes into your ear, and then a ring thing round the outer part of the bud. Both of these bits kept coming off or sliding out of place which was driving me batty. Finally, the monitor bit developed an intermittent fault after 6 months, so I've given up on them.....

Very expensive for normal use

(3 out of 5) by Hossam EL-Ashkar on Jul 17, 2009 (Cairo, Egypt.)
I found it is not very effective for noise cancellation in normal situations where people are talking, etc... May be it is better suited to monotonous noise like machines, engines etc... So i guess it would be better for a trip by a plane, or road noise in a car.

How did I live without these?

(5 out of 5) by Mr. Malcolm R. Kelly on Jul 15, 2009 (York, England)
I bought these earphones with the intention of wearing them in the gym. There is a lot of background noise (including loud music) that I wanted to cut out so that I could listen to recordings of the spoken word.

I would first address a couple of points mentioned by earlier reviewers that concerned me when I decided to buy the earphones.

The first was that there is a background hiss - true but if it's quiet enough to hear the hiss you don't need the noise cancelling turned on.

Secondly that the wires on the earphones were thin - They are no thinner or more fragile than any other earphones I've got.

Thirdly that the ear pieces were very thin and fragile - the ear pieces are no different from a set of waterproof headphones I've got from another manufacturer.

Fourthly that if your ears got sweaty the earphones slipped. They do slip occasionally (maybe twice an hour) but it is very easy to notice and push them back into place.

The headphones work wonders. I an not aware that I am wearing anything other than a set of normal earphones however, whilst the background noise doesn't seem muted, my audio tracks sound much louder and clearer. There must be a muting effect however because I don't hear if anyone speaks to me.

My one criticism is that the wires from your MP3 player to the unit and from the unit to the earphones are the same length. I find that I would like to have the unit near my MP3 player but the earphone wire is not long enough; conversely if I fasten the unit on my collar the wire to the MP3 player then isn't long enough! Making one wire longer than the other would solve this problem however this is not something that makes a major difference to the usefulness of the phones.

I would reiterate what other reviewers have said and what the instructions tell you. You must make sure that you have the correct size of ear piece for the phones and they must fit tightly to gain the benefit from the noise cancelling effect. The only way I found to judge which size was correct was to try them and see if the background was muted.
