Faulty Camera - Poor Canon Customer sevice
I bought a Canon Powershot A570is as a christmas present for my daughter in 2008 - I bought this because I thought Canon were a good make with a good reputation. The camera worked fine for just 4 months when it stopped working showing a 'Lens Error'. I contacted Canon (via the only phone number they publish) and was told to send it to their repairers (Mistake number 1 - I should have returned it to Amazon). I was then astounded to told that the repair was not covered under warranty because the fault was corrosion on the internal PCB - they suggested that the camera had been used in a humid atmosphere or had been exposed to liquid, neither of which was true - it had only been used 'normally' and my only thought was could it have been condensation from being outside in the cold then inside in the warm (externally the camera was, and still is, in pristine condition). Canon do admit that the camera is not fully sealed.
I tried to complain about the situation to Canon, but the only access is via their service centre. They refused to give me ANY contact details for the complaints branch initially. I tried to send them emails via the Canon website but when I checked they claimed nothing had been received???. They sent me 'special' emails which supposedly allowed me to reply or add comments - when sent these said I would receive an acknowledgement within an hour and a reply within 3 days - no acknowledement was sent an no reply was ever made.
Canon have a target of 5 working days to deal with a complain so when I had no response after first 5, then 10, working days I had to ring the service centre again (all these call on an expensive 08705 number). On the last occasion after persisting I was given a contact telephone number for the complants department - this was the wrong number but it did lead me to the correct number (both national calls!). The complaints department twice failed to call me within agreed time scales. They continually refused to honour their warrantry as the alleged cause of the fault was corrosion and they dismissed all my pleas that the camera had only been used normally. Canon did however reduce the repair cost from over £90 to £50 (for a £100 camera!)which I had to acept as my daughter wanted a camera and she could not afford to buy a new one. Overall I am unhappy that a new camera will only last 4 months of 'normal use and disillusioned ion respect of customer service provided by Canon. I found out the address for to Canon and sent them a written complaint but I just got fobbed off.

smart little camera!
I bought the canon A570 as an update from the sony w70. WOW! Its a lot better than any other camera i've ever had! (canon are one of the best)!
There is quite a lot on the powershot range too. But the main thing about this smart little camera is the image quality which is high! You will capture those moments of high quality photographs.
Reccomended!

Sweet camera, needs good batteries
I've used this camera across Africa for the past 4 months. There are lots of features, many of which i have only found by default from fumbling around. I only read the quick manual and not the advanced one before i left.
Its a great camera and my first high spec (for me). The camera does struggle on zoom when the flash is turned off (night shots) and has trouble stablizing.
A minor design floor is that the 'night mode' dial is before the 'indoors mode' yet most people take more pictures inside than at night. I found that using the inside mode at night when outside (rather than the night mode) was better at capturing light with the flash turned off.
Got to buy high spec batteries as it just eats them, 2700amp or higher, what with the high resolutions. Can get from 200-300 pics a day out of this. the batteries that came with the camera lasted one day only!
Buy lots of memory, i started of with 12GB and have just purchased 10GB more! It comes with 16mb card which is laughable, but all manufactures are the same, yet a 2GB card costs under 5 pounds from the Channel Islands!
Often it tell u that u need to change the batteries after a 100 pics or so in one day, but just take them out and place them back and in they are generally fine. High capacity batteries do drain quickly, so i always make sure the batteries are charged before i go out and often take a second set; just in case.
Have had some problems with the lens retracting, (and / or not retracting) and then trying to open up in its case; when its been knocked, causing an error, but by pressing the on/off button it has eventually resolved itself.
Good camera and do recommend. All they need to do is make it thinner for the pocket. Love the skip 10 or 100 pic mode for reviewing the shots!

Fantastic little camera
Bought the Canon A570IS as a pocket camera, for when I did not want to use my DSLR kit, as the internet reviews were good and it had the specific features I wanted (manual exposure, image stabilisation, takes AA batteries, viewfinder among others).
I have not been disappointed as it has performed excellently in all aspects and have now bought an underwater case to use when I go on holiday. Has many facilities that make it a pleasure to use and produces excellent photographs. The noise levels at high ISO equivalents are not the best, but that being said it has enabled me to take photographs that would not have been possible with a 40D and enormous lens because of space, inconvenience or just not having it with me!
It is unfortunate that some manufacturing defects have tarnished the overall score.

battery problems
This camera has it seems a chronic problem with batteries:even with brand new alkaline or rechargeable batteries the low battery indicator comes on either immediately or after a very small number of shots taken. There's much discussion of this problem online, so it appears to be quite widespread. Canon claim its not a hardware problem...hmmm. Caveat emptor
