tinny rattly poor quality sound, distinct hum from subwoofer

(2 out of 5) by R. cavell on Nov 23, 2009 (Highlands, Scotland)
I feel compelled to leave a review of this product, because i disagree avidly with most of the other reviews that persuaded me to buy this item in the first place.

Compared to my old 2.1 creative i-trigue speakers this logitech item is totally and utterly inferior the bass is almost no existent, the speakers crackle when playing mp3's on my pc and when connected to my tv they sound tinny and worse than the standard small speakers of the lcd tv itself. plus the sub woofer has a horrible hum when the bass is turned up.

I cant imagine why this product has ever received a single good review, in future i may not bother reading reviews at all as i am totally disappointed with this product, it is inferior in every way to my old speakers and probably one of the worst sounding speakers i have ever heard, from the minute i connected them i thought something must be wrong with them or the connection due to such good reviews "How can they be so bad", Returned as faulty because they sound so bad. I have had cheap alba speakers that sound better than this!

Sounds Great

(5 out of 5) by P. Cornock on Nov 20, 2009 (Germany)
I just wanted a new surround sound system for my PC as the old one was rubbish and one speaker has started to vibrate. I could not justify spending much money as I really only use it for playing mp3s, I'm not into gaming much and I have a theatre system for films. Looked on Amazon and came up with the Logitech X-540 system which roughly met my requirements as it seemed a fair price and got some cracking reviews. So I ordered it.

It arrived on the third day, very prompt response from Amazon, well done.

On opening the box I found some pretty impressive looking kit (take care when lifting / positioning the subwoofer as the cone is underneath and unprotected). Well put together, solid construction, good to look at and a reasonable weight all go to give a quality feel.

Set-up took as long as it takes to site the six items and route the cables tidily and all the cables have colour-coded plugs (as you would expect) to aid correct connection. The centre speaker can be placed on the desk in front of your monitor or placed over the top of an LCD screen. A cracking idea. And the four satellites can be mounted on the wall if required. This helps free up some desk space but although the cables are long enough for my use I suspect that some people will find them too short particularly for the rear speakers.

The system comes with a compact, wired remote which provides controls for Power, Master Volume, Bass (Subwoofer) Volume and Matrix Mode and a Headphones jack socket. The Matrix mode provides sound from all the speakers where the sound card can only output on 2 channels, I suppose this could be described as synthetic or simulated surround sound.

How do they sound? Splendid, a vast improvement over the Trust system I was used to, very solid, no hint of vibration or background noise, no hum or other interference. Wonderful bass too, particularly good when I tried it with a couple of atmospheric movies.

In conclusion I would be happy to recommend this product to anyone who wants a pretty good sound system without going overboard on price.

Bought as present

(5 out of 5) by S. Cooper on Nov 18, 2009 (Leicester, UK)
I bought this for my dad, who loves his music and recently converted it all to digital format, because of this he uses his computer to listen to music a lot. The speakers he had were good as normal computer speakers but not very good for music quality, we bought these for there quality to handle music and he has not shut up about them since his birthday, he thinks they are wonderful....now how to I top it for christmas is my only concern!!! Why did they have to be so good!!! lol

Excellent!

(5 out of 5) by Mr. D. T. Sale on Nov 10, 2009 (England)
Quality system for the price! Bass is excellent, really deep sound based on a variety of different music and games. Clarity is brilliant even on lower and very high volume and they do go very loud! Would recommend this speaker system to anyone.

Top stuff at a budget Price

I cant really add anything to all thats been said before. It's a fantastic bit of kit, much louder than I expected. The sound quality for Games, Music, DVD's or Blue Rays is perfect.

Two Points -
1) Thanks to the reviewer who advised that the Bass has an exposed speaker on the bottom (I still almost put my fingers through it though lol)
2) To the reviewer who said he had a loud hum even when it wasnt playing. Yours mustve been faulty as I have had no such problem. Advise if it doesnt sound right send it back as mines been fine.
