A good second home computer

(4 out of 5) by W. Black on Feb 29, 2008 (Scarborough UK)
We bought this computer as a second home computer and for that it's wonderful. The build quality is high and the whole thing feels as solid as a rock. The big bright screen is great and the built in camera work fine and Vista seems much better than XP at managing the wireless links.

On the other hand if you're expecting to take this around with you, forget it. It weighs a ton and it's huge. It really is a desk-top replacement that you can tuck away in a cupboard in a few moments rather than something the 'techno road warrior' can travel the world with.

Everything seems to run ok, we use this PC a lot for Skype and games and it seems to manage it all ok, with the reservation that neither I nor the wife get on with Vista terribly well and the Acer 'free add on software' slows everything down horribly, doesn't actually do anything anyone would ever need and takes ages to get rid of.

I wonder if it'll run Linux Ubuntu...

Nice Laptop, shame about the speed

(3 out of 5) by Paul Cooper on Feb 9, 2008 (Derbyshire, UK)
When buying this laptop I was attracted by the low cost, good looks and the large clear screen. I am still very pleased with the overall functionality of the machine and it feels as good to use as laptops costing twice as much.
However, there is a couple of problems which is rather irritating to say the least.
Firstly, boot up time is appallingly slow compared to other laptops and I usually start it up and go to make a drink while its launching. I suspect that Windows Vista is partly responsible and mine came pre-loaded with it. I am considering disabling some of the Vista features to see if that helps much.

(Update: It comes with only 1Gb of memory installed. If you increase that to 2Gb it improves boot-up noticeably. You will need to buy 2x1Gb cards as the 1Gb fitted is 2x500Mb).

Second problem is the wireless network speed. I can only get a poor/fair signal regardless of where I am relative to the router. Maybe its the router but no-one else has reported issues with this type (Orange Livebox).
I know this all sounds very negative but its not all bad. My girlfriend uses the laptop and loves it so I guess if you want a nice laptop but speed isnt a worry then you could do much worse in terms of build quality.
