this system is sweet!!!

(5 out of 5) by R. Adelekun on May 21, 2008
You can't really go wrong with Sony, and this system is the bees knees. The sound is great, the USB function is cool-and it remembers where you left off. One thing to remember, read instructions when installing, you may need to switch the red and yellow wires, otherwise all pre-sets will disappear (depends on the car). Man, i love sony............

Great buy

(5 out of 5) by Non-geeky scientist on Feb 7, 2008 (London, UK)
I bought (and installed this myself) purely based on the reviews and advice posted here. I did initially want a stereo which had direct iPod control on the faceplate, but they were a bit more expensive. Got drawn to this one because of its high rating with reviewers and great price.

Having never fitted a car stereo before, I thought it would be difficult, but it was really simple and quick - done in a few minutes. Spent far more time trying to get the old Pioneer MD player out of my Honda Civic - had no idea where the release keys were, so had to improvise. I didn't want to spend more on new Pioneer stereo release keys that would be useless after I had removed the old stereo.

I can plug my iPod through the USB port and skip through albums and songs using the buttons on the faceplate - don't think I can access my playlists - though haven't tried yet. It starts playing a random song when it is switch it on. Apparently you can fully control your music via the iPod's (or other MP3 player) controls if you plug into the front aux input - but this involves buying an extra cable. May not be so good to try and combine driving and trying to read the tiny display on an iPod nano. The sound quality is great, at least to me - anyway much better than listening to iPod music via a FM transmitter.

Had no problem to get the stereo out of Demo mode - just look in the manual. Only knew that it would be in Demo mode as it is mentioned by previous reviewers. Wasn't too keen on the red lights on the dial and buttons, but was easily changed to green. The stereo came with a remote control - not sure about if it is a necessary item - haven't taken it out of the packaging yet - perhaps give it to back seat passengers to use. Check out the FAQs on this stereo on the Sony website for further info not listed here or in reviews.

Overall, very pleased with this purchased and even more pleased that I managed to install it myself rather than pay someone to do it for me.

Great sound, but beware of connection issues

(4 out of 5) by Nick Hateboer on Dec 26, 2007 (Dorset, UK)
Other reviewers suggested that connecting this stereo up would be a doddle. It certainly appeared straight forward enough with the enclosed adapter leads, bit I couldn't work out why every time I turned the ignition off, I lost everything in the memory, including the clock and all stations. I emailed New Image Car HiFi, but they never got back to me (so much for customer support). I then took it to a local dealer and they informed me that with certain cars (like my Peugeot 406) you have to switch two leads. I didn't have a 'hot lead' to the car battery. They did this for me and now it's working beautifully. The sound is much better than with the old stereo, especially in XPLOD mode and fuctionality is good. So 4 stars because of the wiring issues and lack of support, otherwise excellent.

Good all round unit.

(5 out of 5) by Peter Debenham on Feb 7, 2007 (Cambridgeshire)
Well designed unit from Sony. Everything seems to work well. The different sections are well integrated.

Sound quality (radio, CD, MP3s via USB) is fine, at least to my ears. I am picking up all the FM stations I expected so radio sensitivity is okay. I have not tried the auxillary input.

One good feature (not in manual, and indeed going against the FAQ on Sony's website) is that the unit remembers where you were on an MP3 track from the USB even after the memory stick has been removed and re-inserted. This is useful if your MP3s include long programmes from the BBC's website. The unit takes about 20s to catalogue my 1GB USB stick so there is a brief delay before you can play anything from USB.

Manual is good. Fitting easy. The only thing that slowed me down slightly was needing to get the unit out of "demo" mode. How to do this is described in the manual but it should really be highlighted in the fitting guide.

Have to agree with everyone else...

(5 out of 5) by Alex Young on Jun 30, 2007 (Nottingham, UK)
I read all the reviews and went for this unit. Did not disappoint. So much so that I'm going to buy another to put in my Zafira for a long trip to Spain.

Fitted in my 22 year old bmw with no real bother. Money well spent. Took a while to work out which wire went where, mostly because I had to put a new continuous live in, but on more modern cars, this should not be an issue.

Sound quality etc all superb. Well chuffed.
