Pioneer DVR-545HX-S

(5 out of 5) by M. Naughton on Feb 3, 2007
WOW this unit is good, great picture quality from DVD and HDD, HDMI and Component out, digital sound out is supplied through a digital phono connector and there is not a optical out,Lot's of features for photo's, mp3's and even a facility to edit your store your from your digital camcorder, yes you have to wait 24 hours for the guideplus EPG to download but thats the same from many units. it has a digital and analogue tuner, pause live tv and chase play recordings work well. the lack of a second digital tuner means you cannot watch one freeview channel and record another, but it has a great facility to record from your Sky box and even select the correct channel through a remote lead.
In summary, I'm very pleased that I purchased this unit the minor negative of no second digital tuner can be easily overcome if you have a Sky box aswell or buy purchasing an additional digital tuner £30 approx and pluging it in through the scart connections at the rear of the unit.

Excellent all round entertainment centre

(5 out of 5) by David Hanley on Dec 21, 2006
Playback picture & sound quality is excellent. Its really a lot more than a DVD HDD recorder, as you can copy MP3's and DIVx files from a USB HDD to it, and then view them at your leisure (upto 999 titles).
Its got chase play and you can pause live tv too.
The freeview tuner, takes a while to gets is EPG uploaded - don't expect to see this in the first 24 hours, and the diagrams in the manual are a little unclear, but its very easy to set up if you follow the instructions to the letter, rather than knowing better as I tried to!

Fantastic, now I understand why I waited so long, and didn't buy that Sony or Panasonic I was going to buy!

David Hanley's bad review

(3 out of 5) by Vinnie on Mar 14, 2007
I actually got one of these after reading reviews and because it ticked all the boxes of the options I was looking for. After getting it home and switching on I find that you cannot copy Divx files to the HDD from disc or USB; you can't even view them on USB! I thought I would mention this so other people aren't confused about the units functions and to say that David Hanley's review is misleading.

The other functions it has are very good, but on the whole I really don't think its worth the money!

Last note, its easy to make multi-region.
