Far Better Than I Expected
I was looking for a surround sound system for my home computer, and I didn't have much in the way of money to spend on one. So after searching for a long time comparing products, I managed to narrow my options down to this one, and a more expensive Logitech system that cost just over fifty pounds. I decided to go for this cheaper Philips system simply because I didn't like the speakers of the Logitech. To be honest I wasn't really expecting much from this surround sound system, after all how good can it be when it costs less than forty pounds and some setups I looked up went into the region of hundreds of pounds (and in a few cases thousands!)
Thankfully however, I am very pleased with the results I get from this Philips system, far better than I expected especially considering the low price. Whether I'm watching movies, playing games or listening to music, the sound quality really is excellent (granted there is some slight static near the highest volume.) The speakers are small and neat (though it would have been good if they were wall mountable.) The intrusions are very detailed and easy to follow making setting up the system a breeze. My only real complaint is that there is no headphone jack, but I suppose it's not a great loss.
But overall this really is a very good value system that performances excellently. A few minor omissions that I've mentioned above, means I can't award the product five stars, but if you're like me - on a tight budget, and looking for excellent sound for your computer, then look no further, as this Philips system is actually pretty damn good.
Sound is OK, but questions over build quality
Easy to set up and the sound is OK, particularly if you're new to 5.1 and don't want to spend too much. However, I worry about the build quality. The first set I got emitted random, and very loud, hums from time to time, the volume control didn't work properly and after a couple of days one of the satellites developed a constant crackle. Upon replacement, the new one worked for a month before failing completely. At this point I gave up, got my money back and bought a Logitech X-540 instead. For an extra £10 you get superior sound, a headphone jack and an on/off switch on the volume control and, four months on, no problems at all.
