Spare batteries - be careful

(4 out of 5) by Richard Lewis on Jul 31, 2007 (London, UK)
I don't have a G7 although I've seen it in action (very impressive!) but wanted to comment on David Glasgow's suggestion about buying non-Canon batteries on auction web sites.

Be aware that this can be a very dangerous practice. There are a lot of fake Li-ion batteries out there and if they don't have the necessary safety features they can explode - and I mean *seriously* explode like "blow a small hole in the ground" explode.

Yes, you can be OK, but is it worth taking the risk, especially with your brand spanking new PowerShot G7 camera?

I don't work for Canon, in case you're wondering, but I have a friend who has blown up a AAA Li-ion battery in his garden as an experiment and seen the results. Sorry, David, I thought your review was great otherwise!

Good throw away camera

(1 out of 5) by J. Hodgson on Nov 1, 2008 (Lincoln uk)
Canon PowerShot G7 purchased on 9th June 2007 total failure october 2008. New circuit board required. Repair bill will be £265.00. I contacted Canon to ask for a goodwill jesture only to be told no chance. The camera had very little use holidays etc.

Superb

(5 out of 5) by A verocious reader on Mar 12, 2008 (London)
I was looking at the G9 but then Amazon offered the G7 at a great price (£200) so I went for the G7.

This is an enthousiast's camera -- you need to spend some time looking at all the options, studying the manual and then setting up the camera for you before it delivers what you expect. I worked out which mode to choose, change the area for autofocus and set the camera to maximum resolution. Amazing photos. The camera has a very good flash with red-eye reduction which works!

Highly recommended if you don't need RAW which the G9 does, and if you can get the G7 at a good price. Digital cameras change so quickly these days and last year's model is usually superb yet at a reduced price.

Great camera BUT...

(3 out of 5) by G. Taylor on Feb 10, 2007 (Langdon Hills, Essex, UK.)
I was very impressed with my new G7 until I noticed a DEAD-PIXEL on the LCD screen. Amazon replaced my faulty camera very quickly (well done Amazon !!!) but the replacement was also faulty. The fault on the replacement was a HOT-PIXEL (white) on the CCD itself & therefore on any prints etc. This replacement has also been returned to Amazon for a full refund.

I also own a Canon EOS 20D + 4 Canon lenses & I personally rate CANON very highly as a brand but I do feel let down on this occasion.

Faulty

(1 out of 5) by MB on Jul 4, 2007 (UK)
Received this camera today and am returning it for a refund. There seems to be a common problem with faulty pixels on the display, which is also flickering and producing strange colour casts. Feels like a well built camera but from other reports there must be quality issues.
