Astounding camera - faulty CCD
Out of the box, used simply as "point and click", this camera takes outstanding photographs. Unfortunately I had only just started exploring the comprehensive features when I identified an identical bright-blue patch (larger than just one pixel) on every photograph (a fault on the CCD). Presently awaiting Amazon to replace the faulty unit.
Even with the disappointment of having to return (for replacement) the camera, I am genuinely impressed with both the physical build of the camera and the quality of photographs it takes.
+5 Stars: Quality of camera
-1 Star: Faulty unit

Great camera let down by a couple of minor things
I am very pleased with this camera despite two weaknesses. The LCD flickers badly if there is any flourescent lamp in the field of view (50Hz - I have not tried 60Hz countries). This includes low energy lamps. The lamp also creates a colour caste down the display. Don't buy this camera if you depend on automatic red-eye reduction. The camera uses the green focus assist lamp as a red-eye reduction lamp and it just does not work. Other than that I think it is great.

Good but I suspect not the best....
First, top marks to Amazon for getting this to me within a few days of ordering.
Next, this is/will not be the best camera you can get for your money. The G9 is available for for a few dollars more on the same site.
Also - I don't know yet if this counts as a fault but I too have a flickering LCD. This only occurs in certain artificial light conditions, strangely not under fluorescent light as per a previous reviewer. I'm considering living with it because, under all other light conditions including normal daylight all is fine.
The best bits - it's a great camera in terms of feel, appearance and features. Really easy to use, great quality and really good images. The retro look is just great.
The switches, dials, and controls are a breeze, very easy to take really good pics.
I sold a FZ-50 with a tilt and swivel screen to fund the purchase of this camera, however as I discovered you don't need a tilt out and swivel LCD with a camera if you have one a Powershot G7 as the LCD has a great wide angle view, high or low, even if framing a shot high above your head or low below it.
All in all a good purchase though I would say go for the G9 while Amazon still have it at a few quid more, you get better resolution, RAW, and a bigger LCD..
UPDATE - as per original review I believe this item is faulty as the LCD flickers constantly in artificial light. The spec/manual refers to the LCD flickering in fluorescent light but not artificial light - it really is annoying so it is being returned. Full marks to Amazon for the full and prompt refund on this item.

Frustrating at times
This is the second Canon digital camera I've bought in the last year that was defective out of the box. With this one, the microphone doesn't work at all, so all my video is silent, which is very sad because the 1024x768 quality is fantastic.
The other little gripe I have is that it doesn't remember flash settings, so if you are walking around a flash-prohibited venue, then you have to remember to disable the flash every time the camera turns on.
Otherwise I am very happy with the camera, especially with the smart stitch-assist feature which helps to overlay multiple images in the viewfinder for better panoramic scenes or matrix effects.

Superb camera, but faulty
Ordered one of these cameras, thought all was great until I noticed 4 dead pixels on the LCD. Canon have a 99.99% perfect pixels quality but when buying their new top of the range compact flag ship - you expect 100% from day one.
Amazon where quick to issue me with a no quibble replacement, only for this camera to have a white (hot) pixel on the CCD.
It begs me to ask how many more of these cameras are faulty as I notice someone else on here has posted the same problems with the camera - the problem really is for people to be aware of dead pixels, what they are, where they are, and how to spot them.
Aside from these problems, it would have been the perfect partner to my 2 year old Canon digital SLR.
