A Fine Sony LCD TV

(5 out of 5) by Robert Beaver on Oct 18, 2006 (Northallerton, North Yorkshire United Kingdom)
A most excellent 20 inch LCD TV. I found the automatic tuning interesting in that during the first tuning the set could not find ITV...and so I re- selected the automatic tuning and on the third attempt everything within the Digital Selections of TV transmissions were found (including ITV). The set allocates the TV channels with suggested numbers (BBC = 1, BBC2 = 2 etc).

The quality of sound and screen picture is marvellous. I chose the `Standard' Picture Mode instead of `Vivid' as that suited my wife and self. Looking at the images on the TV and comparing them with our Toshiba CRT TV is `like having your eyes cleaned'.

The clarity and sound is very good and I think the Sony LCD TV Black surround is as a TV should be...all one can see during an evening viewing with dimmed lights is a crystal clear TV screen. Am not keen on Silver Coloured Surrounds.

I purchased this set TV for a small room. I will buy the Sony 26 inch for our larger room...anyone want a CRT Toshiba???

Bob Beaver of Northallerton says, if you but this Sony KDL 20S2030U you will not be disappointed.

Very Good LCD Tv, if a bit expensive.

(4 out of 5) by Kim Fowley on Jan 11, 2007 (Ireland)
I just got this Sony Tv yesterday and it was very easy to set up.I bought it because it had the best picture quality of all the many LCD tvs in the shop. The menus are very easy to use and it has the usual quality you expect from Sony (its not made in Japan but is assembled in Slovakia.

The reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I find in dark scenes or indoors the picture quality is not as good as my old CRT television. There tends to be a softness in faces etc and some shadowing. With outdoor scenes the television works very well. The sound quality is not bad but not top notch - I've heard better.

Overall I would recommend this television, it was a lot better than others I saw and if you can get used to a 20" screen (I don't like big tvs) it is a very good buy with great extras.

Small but perfectly formed

(5 out of 5) by Paul Madge on Oct 4, 2007 (West Sussex UK)
The Sony KDL20S2030 is proof of the philosophy that you get what you pay for - you can buy a 20" LCD TV for half the price of this one. However, both the visual and audio quality of this set puts it at the top of the pile. The picture is vibrant, sharp and very lifelike with an almost startling intensity that is missing in most other sets of this size and larger. Also, the sound quality belies the size of the set in that it is extremely clear and has significant presence to it. Additionally, the range of settings and connections including HDMI is very wide indeed. Initial setup is very easy too being largely automatic.

Only two slight "nit picks" from someone who is hard to please when it comes to gadgets - the remote control is silver as opposed to black (I bought the black version of this TV) and its scale is disproportionately large given the size and likely placement of this set - to me this is lazy on the part of Sony in such an expensive product. I think they "borrowed" a remote from a larger set.

Overall, though, this is a high quality product, that is well finished with matt surfaces to the cabinet and screen (unlike the distracting shiny "piano black" of some rival manufacturers sets), high quality output and logical controls. In summary, unreservedly recommended.

Best of the class

(5 out of 5) by Dean Rogers on Aug 30, 2007 (United Kingdom)
Not a lot to add to the previous reviews. I had waded through 3 other TV's and found their picture quality poor but, having paid £450 for this in Dixons, I still consider this to be excellent value. At the Amazon price it is a steal...

My only concern with buying on-line was the inability to see the TV before purchase and having been stung by 3 others I was not prepared to lose more money. I need not have been concerned and I vouch for this TV set without reservation. It is quite simply the best 20 " LCD TV on the market (even has two scarts)

Size isn't everything

(5 out of 5) by Ichabod J on Sep 21, 2007 (Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire)
Good picture quality, decent sound, lots of connectivity options, including HDMI, plus inbuilt Freeview tuner; everything you could wish for in a small TV. Also, and importantly, considering it's likely to live in bedrooms and kitchens mostly, it has nice clean lines and the design is less obtrusive than most sets. (It helps that the model is available in silver, black or white, so you can choose what will work with the intended location.)

As others have mentioned, the sound quality especially is markedly better than most sets of this size - a real plus when listening to digital radio stations via the Freeview.

Yes, it costs a bit more than some, but worth the extra. Heartily recommend.
