I got one of these two months ago. It was easy to setup, its software support for the Mac was very good, and I was quite happy with it. I especially liked the wifi support, which I found much more handy than I imagined, and the straightforward UI for scanning documents, making copies, and choosing the paper sources. Other nice points: it has an internal paper tray, so it's quite tidy, and it is smart enough to open its own output tray if you decide to print something when it's folded into its most compact configuration.
So I would have given this 5 stars, until a few weeks ago, when it has sometimes started to give a "ink tank cannot be recognized" error for a certain ink tank when I tried to print. Sometimes cycling the power fixed it, sometimes not. A little googling shows I'm not the first.
Maybe I was just unlucky, but here's the thing to know. if you are unlucky, the Canon technical support site is a disaster. it's very hard to find a phone number. When you do find it, it's not free. Then when you call it, there's long waits, and they direct you to other phone numbers. I'm now deep into the rathole. Beware
So far so good.
Followed the instructions for set-up meticulously and carefully and everything went well. Got the printer up and working in USB and then wireless mode on the PC and the print quality is superb. Software intallation is the usual PC 'wizard' stuff and rattles through very quickly and easily.
Also got it working (eventually) wirelessly, via an Airport Extreme base station, from my new iMac. 'Eventually' because I am new to Macs (and wireless) so it was unfamiliar to me. Not the fault of the MP600R just me.
Scanning is excellent too. Just a bit slower than dedicated units.
I have made some test prints on Canon Pro Photo paper from full sized Jpg and TIFF files and the quality is spot on. Have not tried B&W yet.
A good multi function device with extensive features
I bought this printer before Christmas, mainly to upgrade my aging HP printer and I wanted to take advantage of the wireless capability. Combine that with the DVD/CD printing, automatic double sided printing, dual paper tray and memory card direct printing this is a true multi function device.
I setup the print head and ink units first although the manual suggests the loading the PC software first (great idea from Canon to have lights to show the ink unit is properly engaged). An obvious point but make sure you connect the printer to a PC with the supplied USB cable, this is so you can establish settings to then allow it to be wireless! (it isn't wireless on your network until you've done this). Once you have gone through the setup process on the 1st PC the wizard advises you to remove the USB cable and away you go you can print wirelessly! Remember to load the drivers on each PC that you want to use this printer in wireless mode (don't forget to disable any security/access restrictions on your ADSL router/gateway whilst you set the printer up on the 1st PC).
After the 1st PC you will need to add a printer on every PC thereafter using the Windows add a printer wizard, this took me ages to sort out but basically you need to know that you need to select the LOCAL printer option and NOT the Network printer option (logically you would think this was a network printer but it isn't, essentially it's a local printer established on a network port). I would have given 5 stars but none of this was in the manual and only my experience of setting printers up got me through this process.
Now the setup is done, the printing on photo paper is superb, double sided was a breeze and discovering that I can scan to any of my PC's wirelessly was a true bonus! (use the Canon network tool on the supplied CD).
I have been unable to print on a printable DVD yet but I think this is because my NERO software doesn't have the Canon MP600R as a "paper stock". Looking for a way to find other software to do this or Nero to come back to me with a solution.
Otherwise a really good buy!
Easy fix for unrecognized ink cartridge
I too was getting the error for unrecognized ink cartridge. Then the little green circ board fell out of the end of the ink cartridge and it hit me that maybe if I put in the little green circ board from the old ink cartridge of the same color, then maybe the ink cartridge would be recognized. It worked! So don't throw out an ink cartridge that still has ink just because of that error and hold onto your empty cartridges in case you need the little green/gold circ boards.
Hope this helps.
Superb All Rounder

It came in a huge box, but that's because it comes with well written manuals in more languages than you can shake a stick at. It has power and usb cables included. The print-head and cartridge installation was quick and easy simply by reading through the manuals. (The lights on the cartridges were a nice touch so you know they are fitted correctly)
This machine is fast at printing, fast at scanning. The output quality is very good. The LCD Screen menus are easy to use and there are just enough buttons to be useful without cluttering up the control panel.
Wireless setup took me 10 minutes and I was printing from downstairs and sending the missus running up to collect the printouts!
I haven't tried the Disc printing yet but if it works as well as the rest of the functions then I won't be dissapointed.
Oh and I even tried the Infared printing from a mobile phone which was pretty good considering the resolution of the phone!
Don't buy the additional bluetooth option as with infared and memory card reader built in to the printer it would be overkill.
