Good "Standard" fidelity

(5 out of 5) by GroundedReviews on Feb 14, 2008 (London, Uk)
This speaker set up is perfect for MP3 playback, and CDs really shine through them.
Out of the box, the satellite speakers are heavy and suggest quality components as opposed to the more plasticky offerings at this price range, though this is mostly due to their metal casing. The Sub is compact enough to sit on the floor out of sight , or even up on a shelf. All in all, an attractive, minimalist look. Set up is as easy as plugging cables into the right places. They should be given a while to run in, to warm up.
The best way to describe the sound quality is to say that it's possible to get a clear, crisp sound that's more than capable of filling an average sized room. There's lots going on here, and you could spend a lot of time setting your ipod's EQ, along with adjusting the 3 bass levels (1,2, and, er,3) on the back of the AEGO, but the simple fact is that it sounds it's best when it is neutral. If you want towers of bass, it's there, but it can have a tendancy to muddy the rest of the mid-range if set to it's highest setting. I imagine this would be an advantage to gamers, but for music the effect can be too boomy.
Once set up, the speakers really sing. The 5 metre cable that is supplied ensures that a wide soundstage can be achieved. It's notable that these speakers are balanced well enough to finally make your ipod sound atmospheric and closer to a CD than you thought it could! Simon and Garfunkle's Bridge over Troubled Water is spacious, the vocals lush, and the strings are set free. Classical music is dynamic and well defined. Massive Attack's Mezzanine (A true dynamic range tester!) is thick and punchy. The flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics sounds almost Live!
Though not an audiophile option, these speakers are more than enough for most people. Bass is strong, and trebles are bright. If anything, these speakers can be seen as a low budget Hi-Fi replacement without ever looking back. Sure, it's not audiophile quality, but then it's not audiophile prices, and it takes up a fraction of the room too.
Compared to other speaker packages, the AEGO Ms have a lot going for them, - it really depends what they are going to be used for. As an iPod Hi-Fi, which is what I use it for, they easily compete with Bose's SoundDock (or more relevantly Bose's Companion Speakers) Also this is less than half the price.
My 5 stars are to reflect Sound quality and Value for Money, and I really don't think there is a better buy as of Feb 2008. Recommended.

Almost perfection

(4 out of 5) by Mr. C. A. Jackson on Jul 29, 2008 (London, UK)
As a professional musician and organist, quality of sound is of paramount importance in my hi-fi set-up. Having upgraded my computer to an iMac two years ago, it wasn't long before I wanted to upgrade the little Labtec speakers which had provided sound whenever sound-clips were featured on a website, so after some research, I purchased a pair of Behringer MS20 active monitors.

Technology, however, refuses to stand still, and in no time at all, I'm watching digital terrestrial television (Freeview) on my computer, using iTunes, and listening to the radio online whenever I am working. The BBC's iPlayer, amongst other things, has revolutionised the way radio, TV and other media are received. The sound from the speakers needs to complement this, and the Behringers were fine, but more was needed.

After further research I was about to purchase another system - indeed I'd made an order online - but I soon stumbled on a clutch of critical reviews from people who had high hopes but were then disappointed. That order was promptly cancelled and this AE Aego M 2.1 system ordered in its stead.

Having set up, my initial impressions? The bass is impressive, with bass drum, bass guitar and double bass being heard commendably. In fact, the opening of Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue & Riffs startled me. Curiously, the subwoofer is unable to reproduce the bottom B flat of the 32-foot flue stop of the organ of Bath Abbey on one CD which my living room B&W subwoofer and my iPod's small Sennheiser PX100 headphones reproduce effortlessly: an unexpected disappointment. In other organ music, the detail of some of the higher stops (mixtures and upperwork) is not as prominent as on the Behringers which have separate treble and bass controls; the Aego doesn't. And some may feel that there could be a little more in the mid-range.

Verdict: the switch was worthwhile. There are a few caveats mentioned above, but I can live perfectly well with these when listening to music at my computer, knowing that my bigger system in the living room will deliver the fussy detail when it's needed. In short, money well spent.

Natural, powerful, beautiful sound.

(5 out of 5) by Tp Mayne on Apr 20, 2008
Beautiful... natural.. powerful sound.

The satellites are small, but rock, rock solid. The bass, is really good. It doesn't sound separate from the rest of the ranges. It's top quality, difficult to distinguish where the bass is coming from - which is great!

Personally I'm satisfied with how all the ranges sound, up, mid and lower.

Anyone thinking about getting a 2.1 system should definitely try these. Anyone thinking about a 2.0 - I say don't get one, and go for this - stick the sub under your desk and the satellites will take up way less space. This thing has a built in amp... it's really nice. These are the 3rd set of speakers I've bought in the last month.. and finally I am satisfied!

Fantastic speakers - brilliant value - highly recommended (and I'm a fussy person).

*Although nothing can be 5, I'm rating 5.. because it's definitely waaay closer to 5 than 4.

alright, but not for £130

(2 out of 5) by Harry Francis Lang on Jul 9, 2008 (uk)
if you take them to their top volume, it distorts massively, you have to bring the sound down so much that its just as quiet as my current speakers which completely defeated the point. the subwoofer is amazing, but the sattelites aren't. it sounds like they are trying to give out the bass frequencies aswell as the treble, and they just can't take it. so they're alright, but not for that large amount of money
