The magic battery!

Jan 2, 2006 - By mobile464

The best feature about this phone is boring but great: the battery lasts for absolutely ages!

I bought it as an Xmas present for a relative who wanted something as easy to use and reliable as possible. I gave it a bit of a test run beforehand and the battery only needed recharging after seven or eight days, and that included calls and texts every day.

The menus are simplified versions of the normal Nokia menu, functions that most people never use have been stripped away and the icons scroll across the screen in a way that lets you see the upcoming icons in the corner.

Interestingly, there's also a series of demo animations which show how to use the main functions of the phone like calls, texts etc. If you ever forget how to do something, you can just pick a demo mode and watch the animation to remind yourself.

I wouldn't recommend this as a phone for more advanced users, it doesn't support Java and it doesn't have any kind of internet connection.

The ringtones are surprisingly good though, about five of them are MP3 files with wonderful sound and even vocals (sample lyric from an M people type singer: "can you hear me when I say... I'm waiting for you to answer my call"), but the catch is that they're built in and you can't add any ring tones of your own.

Oh yeah, and it's also a really good speakerphone. I tried using this with friends and they were unable to tell when I was on speaker and when I was talking normally. I was very surprised because my own smartphone's speakerphone makes me sound like I'm talking from inside a sardine tin.

Basically, this is GREAT for people new to phones or who have no desire to use any advanced features. It hardly ever needs recharging, the screen is bright and colourful and the ringtones sound wonderful. It's not so good for people who want to customise their phones with downloads.

Nokia 1600

Mar 29, 2006 - By R.P (Co Durham)

I bought this little gem as a cheap back-up for my handbag, my main phone, a Motorola V635 seems to need charging every other day !!?? Thats without any playing with it either !! Well I haven't had a Nokia for years untill this one and the Moto is def getting the boot at contract renewal and prob a Nokia will take its place!! The battery lasts for ever on the 1600 - just keeps going and going, fantastic. The phone is easy to use and has good reception - call/sound quality is fine. It has no bells or whistles but it doesnt claim to have - and for £30 it's amazing. If you want a cheap (without looking it) and reliable phone with excellent battery - I'd get yourself one of these!!

cheap but very cheerful

Oct 1, 2006 - By Mac (uk)

This is the third mobile phone that i have owned and not only is it the cheapest but also, by far, it's the most user-friendly and best.

If you are just looking to make calls and send texts, as I am, then you'll have to work very hard to better this little gem.

The set up is very straightforward, the display and sound quality clear and crisp, and the phone is compact and smart. The menu system is intuitive and Nokia should be commended for producing a very good package for very little cost.

Oh, and by the way, I know others have mentioned it but THE BATTERY GOES ON FOREVER!

What a great mobile!

Nov 25, 2006 - By Busy Mum (West Midlands)

I purchased one of this super Nokia 1600 a couple of months ago and I have to say I am SO impressed. The keys are bigger than normal, it has a wonderful colour screen which is bright and clear and the battery just seems to last forever. While it may not have all the features that kids like these days, it is a perfectly functional and ideal mobile for staying in touch and texting. Buy this today - it is a no brainer!

Fantastic 'phone for the price.

Jun 2, 2007 - By Mik (UK)

This is GREAT! It's JUST a 'phone (which is exactly what I wanted); the battery lasts for AGES; it's just the right size (although the keypad MIGHT be a little small for anyone who doesn't see too well, but it's not tiny).
The only reason this loses one star is that the 'Free Weekends Calls Offer' is a bit pants for someone who makes as few calls as I do, since you've got to spend a certain amount (I think it's £5, from memory) during the week to qualify. This hardly matters, and I have no regrets (in life, as in 'phone purchases).
