Open-Ended

Mar 10, 2008 - By GrahamG

So, you've just bought a nuvi 2xx or 3xx but that big touch-sensitive screen looks awfully easy to poke your keys through if you carry it around with them in your pocket. You really will need a protective case. This, the official Garmin case, is the most obvious solution.

It fits well, but it is completely open at one end with no foldover strap or flap so the unit could quite easily slip out of it if you just left it lying flat on the floor of the boot (trunk) for a week. It's quite possible you could then find the case lying in one corner and the unit, unprotected and scratched to bits, in the other.

Another problem is that the case has not really been designed with the location of the power/lock slide switch in mind so you can quite easily turn the unit on accidentally while pushing it into the case.

Not especially well designed, then, and about double the price it should be. If you haven't bought either your unit or case yet, pay a better (more realistic) price for the case by buying Amazon's 'unit plus carry case' package.

Incidentally, the price for this item at the time of writing was about 20 GBP in shops, and my review rating was chosen accordingly. If you can find it heavily discounted you may want to buy it just to own the official Garmin branded case, but the design flaws will still be there at any price.

Garmin "w" case

Apr 13, 2008 - By K. charles-neale (Somerset, England)

A good, well made case for the Garmin 250w (and similar). It holds the unit firmly, so unless you out dancing with it in your pocket, it won't fall out (certainly hasn't in my glovebox)!

I would agree with the other reviewer that the power switch can get nudged so the unit turns on; not really the fault of the case, more of the location/design of the switch on the unit.

Leather feels cheap

Aug 25, 2008 - By lazeeboy (Surrey, UK)

Bought this together with the Nuvi. It's the one like in the pictures submitted by A. Hogben (picture 2,3,4) which has a foldover flap. It is leather, but feels thin & cheap. Holds my Nuvi alright though, which is what I expect from it. It has a belt loop at the back if you ever fancy using it. I think the flaps closes with a magnet - I wonder whether it affects my unit? Hope not...

It is not secure!!

Aug 20, 2008 - By Capt Khan (london uk)

OK. This case has not got a flap and is therefore open at one end. I carried the case with Nuvi inside and the Nuvi came out and was damaged.

This is not a case for carrying your nuvi around, but it does the job, in a glove compartment.
