An excellent portable DVD player

(4 out of 5) by Rescind on Aug 5, 2005 (Australia)
I was hesitant to pick up this player at first, until I read up on Shinco and their build quality. I was surprised to find on first using it how good the quality of the screen was - no ghosting - and the sheer amount of stuff I can play on it. DivX/Xvid, Region 1, 2, and 3 Dvds, you name it, this thing can play it. You can play stuff off of an SD card/USB stick in much the same way.

The reasons I gave it 4/5 are to do with the quality of the divx - sometimes it can have some slightly annoying slowdown off of a disc, but these are minor complaints. Also, the scanlines on the screen are slightly noticeable, but not so much as that they distract you - as someone who watches a fair bit of DVDs, it's merely nit-picking. The last straw for the last star was to do with the quality of the speaker sound - it just wasn't up to scratch, listenable, but tinny. If you want high quality sound, listen with earphones or plug in your own speakers.

The battery lasts a solid 3 hours of film watching, which is enough for anything approaching Exodus. So far I've had no luck finding a spare battery for it (it comes with one), but i'm sure one does exist somewhere.

An excellent player. Ignore any other brand but Shinco.

Shinco 6820 Portible DVD player

(4 out of 5) by J. M. Heard on Jul 11, 2006 (United Kingdom)
This is one of the best specified players around for the money especially with the built in card reader. I tried several models beforehand and this was definately my favourite, good quality and picture. I have noted reference to horizontal lines when viewing stills. This is the normal TV scanning process and mega pixel digital still pictures simply cannot be reproduced in fine detail on any standard TV so its not fair to expect this machine to be any different. (Modern large screen sets do hide the lines by a process called interlacing and also allow RGB input but lets be realistic here !) As 'Go anywhere' portable entertainment this is a really great item and to be recommended - Just waiting for SHINCO to bring out a Freeview digital tuner to complete the package - A few other portable DVD players have Digital tuners but in my view, they just didn't match SHINCO on overall quality/performance/value

Great Player, Terrible supplier!

(4 out of 5) by MoMo on Feb 13, 2007 (UK)
This is a great item but be aware that this is supplied by Allcam and not by Amazon themselves.

Allcam are a very poor retailer and you should think very carefully about placing an order with them, even through Amazon.

I recently tried to purchase a DVD player from Allcam. Called them up on Thursday and was told the item was in stock and would be shipped immediatly. Placed the order and made note that the item was urgent and needed by Friday if at all possible. Monday night and still no sign of the player or any communication from Allcam. Rang them up on Tues and was told that there had been a problem with my payment (which as they had taken payment on Thurs there clearly hadn't been!) but no one bothered to call or email me. They then told me that they didn't actually have any stock so could not ship the item out anyway. When I told them that I was very unhappy with the dismal service and would be placing a comment on the Amazon website they threatened to get their lawers on to me!

Think carefully about using this supplier - you have been warned.

Picture Quality

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 18, 2005
I bought this for my wife’s birthday but am concerned about the picture quality, from reading the other comments the picture quality is excellent. Our unit has horizontal lines that whilst playing DVD are OK ish however when we view photo's the lines blur the photo.

Shinco? Shonky more like

(2 out of 5) by mr chumley on Jul 4, 2007 (Cambridge, UK)
My first thoughts on this box which I got from Digital Daffodil was the build quality was cheap - this was borne out once I tried the unit.

- The DVD lid doesn't sit flush with the case - one end is a few mm higher.
- The volume button was really crackly and cut out the audio in certain positions. They obviously use cheap components.
- The TV Out didn't work at all.

Other criticisms
- software is a bit unfriendly.
- There doesn't seem to be any way of it remembering where you were up to if you play an avi/divx file. Didnt try it with a DVD.
- When the unit is in tablet mode, the remote control sensor is on the top of the unit, facing away from you - doh! No usability testing done there!
- Not sure the travel case can be used tied to the back of a car seat or not - it would be useful if it could.

Positive aspects are:
- Small, light
- Has DivX support
- has in car power supply.
- has USB support

I have sent this back for a replacement in the hope it was a one-off which I am still waiting for (10 days later). All in all a less than joyous experience.

Moral: you get what you pay for.
