True quality

(5 out of 5) by Mr. Paul Walsh on Apr 18, 2006 (Dublin, Ireland)
What a wonderful piece of AV equipment. All my devices are connected through it.

For video, I have my NTL decoder, my DVD player and my DVD/HDD recorder all connected to it through s-video, composite and component connections. These are then upconverted and output through the HDMI connection to my HD TV. This reduces the number of cables I have running from all my devices to my TV. The picture quality is great. This is also very useful for the 5.1 surround sound for all devices.

The sound is true quality. So crisp and clear. I have it only connected to a 5.1 set of speakers, even though it's a true 7.1 amp. When I first connected it, I was totally stunned by the clarity of sound coming from it. I listened to Jeff Waynes War of The Worlds. You can totally hear the sound studio that Richard Burton uses, and can just imagine him standing there. From that to listening to a quality 5.1 sound DVD, where you really do feel like you're in the middle of it all. I watched We Were Soldiers and was blown away by how it sounded. I almost found myself looking for cover as the bullets whizzed by and bombs exploded.

Even the quality of the item itself - solid. It looks good. It is heavy, but it's quality from start to finish.

I would have no concerns at recommending this to anyone looking for a high quality AV receiver, with quality sound and excellent AV connections. All it's missing is upscaling to 1080i or 1080p output. Mind you, I haven't tried just HDMI to HDMI yet.

For the price, it's a stunning piece of AV equipment.
