Cracking camera Grommit!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Oct 18, 2005
Well after buying every camera magazine and reading all the reviews online - it all boiled down to a hands on - so off to Jessops and a play. The two I had narrowed it down to, that suited my needs, were the Panasonic FZ5 and the Canon S2. Almost identical specs - give or take a bit - but the Canon 'felt' better. A bit more robust . I would have much prefered it in black - but that wasn't an option. I decided on the Canon - also because as I already own an Ixus the menu system etc wouldn't be totally alien. Time to buy - so who was the cheapest? Amazon trounced Jessops by £70. No contest. Ordered on Wednesday - delivered ( after a minor hiccup) on Friday
Well done Amazon - and - oh yes - what a cracking camera!

Great camera

(5 out of 5) by C. Birch on Mar 30, 2006 (Bank Hall, St Michael Barbados)
After using Olympus cameras al my life, I read about this model and didn't hesitate to make a switch. It has been an excellent experience so far, with great shots at all zoom levels, and the image stabiliser virtually bringing an end to "camera shake"
One niggle: battery life tends to drop after a while, even on my 2000 mAh batteries. Overall, a most worthy purchase!

Great Camera - But Susceptible To Canon's E18 Error

(3 out of 5) by B. Martin on Mar 19, 2007 (New Zealand)
My partner and I have been using this camera for just under 2 years. The camera itself warrants a 5-star rating: it's a great compromise between point-and-click and DSLR. There's plenty of room for you to fiddle with it's manual settings. The movies are ok quality. Having looked at other similar camera's I would say the LCD screen is a bit small, and it's autofocus is crap in for extreme close-ups. It is quite bulky, and sometime I wished we had a little pocket-sized camera - but as I've said we wanted something DSLR-like but without the price - and that's what this camera is.

However, after two years use and a lot of travel -- but no ABUSE (its been looked after) -- we've encountered the infamous canon E18 error (http://www.e18error.com/) and the lens is stuck out, and we can't use the camera. This is enough to put me off buying a Canon digital in the future, and something you should be wary of if you are looking at buying a Canon camera.

A Little Gem

(5 out of 5) by Highlander on Sep 22, 2006 (Scotland, UK)
Had this camera for a while now and just keep being amazed at how good it is. I'm not a professional photographer but the output from this camera is as good as being one. Superb for both daytime and night time shots.

This camera has what seems an endless array of features for every occassion and the zoom is fantasic (12x optical). Even if you don't want to learn lots of features have a quick look through the manual and I'm sure you find a couple of features which will make your pictures that bit more special with the minimum of effort.

A must buy if you looking for a quality camera at a reasonable price, but be warned make sure you have a large memory card especially if you are taking movies 1GB (high speed) recommended.

Owner-review of the Canon S2 IS digital camera

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 3, 2006
Being a non-professional (analog) Canon photographer for many years I am absolutely thrilled by the quality and versatility of this (my first) digital camera!

When shopping for a dig my #1 wish was quality, #2 > 5M pix, and #3 analog zoom at least 8x. .

So, "Canon" surely made up for #1 (Quality and price/preformance).

I bought the dig in July (TheNetherlands) and took it to holidays in Chicago and Rome

The image quality absolutely is superb, the zoom 12x (analog) works great and offers great possibilities the analog camera only provides when you take tonnes of glass with you ;-)

And then all these extra's: video capability, stereo sound (also with pictures), macro and super macro, very many programming possibilities .. I am still in the process of exploring all of its facilities.

And last but not least: the great design and usability ...

No drawbacks? Yes, two: No .raw format and the dig lives on 4 AA (rechargeable) penlites, which make it more heavier than it would have been with a Li accu.

To summarize: If you really are looking for a quality dig, with 12x analog zoom, 5.3M pix and a lot of interestingfeatures .... this is your hit!
