Average for the price

(3 out of 5) by J. Compton on Apr 15, 2006
Having read many other reviews and wanting a bit more versatility than a 2.1 system can offer, I decided to go ahead and buy these. When I opened the box and started experimenting with them I was pleased, but not overwhelmed.

The sound quality is wonderfully clear in the mids and trebles, but the base is distinctly lacking (and that's not compared to 2.1 systems but compared to other average 2.0s. The old bundled speakers that came with my now 5 year old desktop have a fuller base). Also, the sound does distort at higher volumes, but by that I don't mean just at Earth-shattering volumes, you can hear the loss at even 'quite loud'. Thankfully, there isn't even a hint of 'electric hum' that many speakers have.

The pics make them look great, but in real life they look plasticy, and the gray back just doesn't fit the look of the front. As others have mentioned, they're both light and top-heavy. Even the slightest knock or tug of their cables sends them flying.

Overall, I'm happy to have them (they're miles better than my laptops speakers), but they've just got too many niggles for the price (they're some of the more expensive normal 2.0s before you leap to the audiophile systems) to call them 'excellent'. They're good, but they don't perform above and beyond the call of duty; they meet the minimum I would demand given the price so they also don't deserve a 'bad' rating either. Just average.

Great value - fantastic for music

(5 out of 5) by Craig on Sep 5, 2005 (Edinburgh United Kingdom)
When I was looking for new speakers for my pc, I shopped with the knowledge that I listen to music more on my computer than I do play games. As such, I felt that a subwoofer wouldn't really serve me as well as a normal 2 piece system.

When I received these speakers, I was immediately impressed by their looks - the pictures on the site don't do them justice, they look fantastic. They are very compact, and fit the look of most modern (ie, not beige) PCs very well.

Installation is as simple as you'd expect for 2.0 speakers - two cables and a power plug. Can't really ask for much easier than that. I would be careful where you're putting them though - they aren't the heaviest speakers, and have a small base area, so could be knocked over very easily. Mine are blue-tacked to the desk for safety.

Sound wise, they are very impressive for the price. The high end is nice, mids are clear and detailed. The bass, as some have pointed out here, isn't room shaking, but then you really shouldn't expect that from speakers this size. This doesn't mean, however that these speakers are lacking bass - they don't go down to massively low frequencies, but you will be able to hear the details in the bass, it sounds tuneful rather than throbbing or thumping, and you'll be able to hear exactly what the bass is doing just fine. They'll go loud enough for most people too, I'd guess; I can hear them just fine from the other side of the room without turning them up past half way.

I'd highly recommend these speakers to anyone who mainly uses their computer to listen to music, assuming you don't listen to dance, hip-hop, or anything else that requires pounding bass. If you don't want your floor to shake when playing games or watching movies, you'll do just fine with these for games too.

Cracking good speakers

(5 out of 5) by Ian Gray on Aug 2, 2006
These speakers are very well built, good to look at and most importantly; great sounding. I read the other reviews about distortion at high volumes and buzz when kept low and all I can say is that the other people must have faulty kit because mine work perfectly. I bought them to use at work and whilst they don't compare with hi-fi quality speakers that I have at home, they have an impressive sound, create a good stereo image and are loud and clear enough to fill a medium sized room with music. I'm sure if I played a track with a thumping bass with the volume turned up to the max they might struggle. But even the hi-fi manufacturers don't recommend you do that as you will blow the drive units and get a distorted sound. All in all well worth the investment if used within their limitations.

Crystal Clear, but a downside

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Sep 26, 2005
I was very impressed by these speakers. They're not too big, but still look sleek sitting on a desk with their black/chrome finish. Most importantly, the sound really is crystal clear.

On the downside the sound does tend to distort when the volume is turned up very high (although realisitcally this is hardly ever a problem). There is also an extremely common fault where the blue LED light fails to turn off when you turn the speakers off (I've had mine replaced twice now, free of charge, by Creative Support for this fault).

i-trigue 2200

(4 out of 5) by D. Cooper on Dec 10, 2004 (Birmingham, West Mids United Kingdom)
They are obviously going to be base light given their diminuitive size but the base is still there and it's in proportion to the rest of the sound coming out, which is very detailed and acurate. A base guitar comes over as just that and is not just a low frequency thumping that could be made by any instrument capable of producing a low frequency note as many sub woofer systems produce. I am enjoying music from my PC more now than ever before because I have a sound stage in front of me not an amorphous wash of sound with zinging high and thumping, droning low notes. Great value for money.
