I looked long and hard before choosing the Canon PIXMA iP4000. I have had it for 4 days now and I am really pleased with most aspects of the printer.
I love the separate ink-cartridges. No more paying for ink you don't need, you only have to replace the colour that runs out. Another brilliant addition is that of two separate Black cartridges. One, the larger, is used for text, whereas the smaller is used only for photos. This means that you can buy cheap replacement ink for the text printing and Canon original for the photos.
Printing photos is easy and the borderless printing works brilliantly. The prints really are comparable to Boots, excellent quality. I used the Canon print sample to get one of my pictures printed on both the iP4000 and iP5000 and to be honest there really isn't that much difference, the iP4000 definitely offers better value for money, at least at 4 x 6.
I also think that printing text documents is good. It is certainly very fast and fine quality. At highest quality it looks almost as good as a laser printer. The duplex printing feature is also really useful and a brilliant way of saving money on paper.
So far the only aspect of the printing which isn't fantastic is that of pictures/graphics on normal paper, these are at best good to very good and at worst below average. Fiddling with the printer driver settings really helps and after fiddling about I have found them to be constantly good now that I have found the right settings.
Overall I would definitely recommend this printer. I have yet to try the CD printing feature but judging by the other reviews it works very well. If you print a lot of pictures on normal paper it may not be your best option. But for a brilliant value photo printer that is very good a text, and has a huge range of features then look no further than the iP4000!!!

I purchased the Cannon pixma ip4000 and was blown away with the speed and quality of the photographs. I never really understood what the difference was between a normal injet printer and a photo printer. I had printed photo's on my normal epson injet printer many times. But the Cannon ip4000 is simply amazing, there is no comparision! The photo's that you print are really as good as any photo lab, a friend of mine asked me for a photograph she had seen of me so I printed it out on this machine and she claims it was better than the one she wanted (which I had paid for from a photo processing lab!)

I think the reason that made me decide to buy this was...... yes I liked the look of it, but the main point is the ink does not cost a fortune unlike some other printers around. Lets face facts you will need to buy ink at some point in the future and if you don't look at the cost of ink before you buy the printer you could be faced with a hefty bill! but with this you have seperate ink tanks, so you just replace the inks that you need to and the Cannon original ink is not too expensive to buy. I personally will stick with the original ink as I am so happy with the quality. Also you can print onto cd/dvd as well, you must have either have a printable disk or otherwise put a cd/dvd lable on the disk and print whatever you want it is so simple.

Amazing printer, after suffering with various EPSON disasters for a number of years (I was afraid to print on my last printer, ink cost a fortune), I picked this iP4000 and it has restored my faith in home printers.

Cheap ink, speed and quality are all here in abundance. Don't waste time with EPSON or any other manufacturers, there's a reason why Canon are popular - they make the best stuff (printers, cameras and scanners etc.)

Without hesitation, I recommend you buy this printer, or it's more up to date partners like the IP400R. This really produces quick, high quality prints. It prints on CD (I had a little difficulty with this, but I think that had more to do with me not understanding instructions very well! It printed excellently in the end). It is pictbridge capable, although doesn't have a card reader. It is rather bulky, but it's design isn't objectionable, rather like a designer bread bin. I deserted HP printers when they couldn't be bothered with a decent driver for Mac OSX. I'm so glad I did. Some of the software provided looked like wonky OS9 ports, but work fine. Word of EXTREME caution: DO NOT use Kodak papers, otherwise you may curse buying this printer. Buy Canons own and even their cheap paper produces great results. Even Kodak Ultima paper makes the printer look like a £19.99 inkjet. My mother has a HP printer and Kodak paper produces unbelievably poor results too, so don't blame the printer. Oh, did I mention it had two paper trays, a top paper feeder and a bottom cassette, it also has duplex and boarderless printing. Great value and works well on Mac OSX, without the need for Gimp print drivers: so tweak the settings rather than using the defaults to get the best performance. Now, where's that USB cable?

The Canon PIXMA iP4000 Colour Bubble Jet Printer is a great printer. The colour ink is vibrant and colourful, it prints fairly quickly, the ink dries pretty quickly, for that matter so no more smearing ink all over your hands!

It is very simple to use: two paper trays, change which tray the printer takes it's paper from in a click, and easily hook it up to the computer. Need to restart the printer? No problem. Just press the on/off button and it will turn off, without making the printer haywire. Press it again, and it will start up again. This off/on process takes around a minute to do. The printer won't print? Just restart it, and a few minutes later you will have your documents/pictures printed.

The Canon PIXMA iP4000 Colour Bubble Jet Printer looks tidy and clean, without fuss and frills. Lift the cleverly concealed flap on top of the printer, and you can have access to the ink cartridges. The 1st ink tray is above the printer, while the second is under it.

You can choose printing speed: if you want a quiet, but slightly slower printing speed (which still is rather quick-aproximately 15 seconds for two pages) you can adjust the speed. If you are in a hurry and need the documents and fast, then you can switch it to Fast-very noisy, but very quick.

The Canon PIXMA iP4000 Colour Bubble Jet Printer is a great printer that I recommend.
