Multi-region compatibility.

(5 out of 5) by Mr John Cresswell on Jul 29, 2004 (Bedford, Beds United Kingdom)
I think the reason most people are having problems is that whilst the dvd is multi-region it outputs NTSC & some television can't handle it. My old dvd player and a lot of other dvd players convert NTSC to pal, therefore the tv can display it correctly. On my television it would only work via scart 1 as scart 2 would not cope with ntsc (as is the case on some televisions). So if you want this dvd player I recommend you check your Tv can handle NTSC. I think this is the reason why their are mixed reports as to multi-region working & why their older dvd players may have been ok.

Excellent basic DVD player

(5 out of 5) by J. E. Davidson on Mar 29, 2005 (UK)
This is a very good basic multi-region DVD player. The picture and sound quality are both very good and I have had no problems with it at all. It worked straight out of the box and so far I have played region 1 and region 2 DVD, commercial VCD, home created VCD and DVD all without any problems.

It's a SONY!

(5 out of 5) by Mark James (Wales) on Nov 27, 2004 (Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire United Kingdom)
This DVD player is just superb. I bought it because it can play a DVD from any country - very handy if you travel to the USA for your holidays.
The machine detects region 1 NTSC instantly, with no difference in the picture quality. It is easy to operate with a well laid out remote.
DVD +/- RW/R all play great. JPEG phot discs - no problem!
I don't think you can go wrong with this SONY player.

Excellent.

(5 out of 5) by S. T. Williams on May 28, 2004 (London)
I read most of the reviews for the Toshiba SD330 m/r player which I was tempted to buy, but in the end I opted for the Sony for £10 more. The setup is simple and takes no more than 5 minutes. It comes with an A/V cable but no scart lead, although there is a scart socket at the back. The picture quality is very good, and the sound can be changed through a number of Virtual Surround Sound settings (for those like me without a home cinema package). The sound and the subtitles can be changed using the remote very easily during playback without any disruption the picture. Other buttons on the remote include picture navigation, zoom, angle, and scene replay.
For £80 with free delivery I would definitely recommend this.

V.Good, excellent price, so easy to use

Brought this a couple of weeks ago for my 84yr old Grandmother as she was after some video tape boxsets which i found were cheaper to buy on dvd boxsets (??) (on Amazon), so i suggested it would be just as cheap to buy a dvd player and she agreed but i was a bit worried she would not be able to operate it, as she is still confused as to how to change the clock & timer on her central heating boiler control after about 7 yrs of me showing her but i was pleasantly suprised, after only about 2 hours of repeatedly showing her the basic's (a few bang head on wall moments) turn on, select tv channel, open dvd tray, put dvd in, press play and stop she seems to have mastered it, so next step is menu control and track skip.

The unit is what you can expect of Sony, good quality, sturdy, easy to use and good looking. Only bad points were not available in black & quite wide when compared to how slimline it is (couple of inches wider than a VCR), also wish the manufacturers would include scart leads in the box.

Very good value, even better now as 20% off (typical that 20% is knocked off a few days after i brought it), as searching through the other electrical dealers it was around the £75 mark and that was not for multi region, also found a company that could make it a multiregion player for around £50. So you are saving around £75 with Amazon's multiregion offering.

Picture quality good and reasonable sound quality but you need a digital amp if you want 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround sound as only has stereo & optical outputs on the unit.
