Best in Class
I have been really impressed with the Hd-MD format. It has advantages over hard disc based audio players as it uses simple AA batteries. Hard disc systems use an internal rechargable battery which eventually gives up. It is perfect for travel as you do not need to carry a charger. The sound quality is fantastic and and it can be used to carry non-audio files as an external drive.
I would recommend this model which I have been suing for 4 months.

Far superior to MP3 player
HI-MD recorder/players can take discs of 1GB capacity, greater than that of a lot of similarly priced MP3 players. They're powered an AA battery so you don't have to worry about a built in lithium ion one running dry miles from a possible recharge. Tracks can be transferred from PC to media in minutes via USB cable. Most importantly the sound quality is good even on highest compression file type. HI minidiscs can be purchased through Amazon or on eBay. Sadly the technology is now 'obselete', people being seduced by the stupidly small and supposedly 'convenient' MP3 players. My advice, snap up one of these MZ-NH600 whilst you still can!

What a load of rubbish
The main reason I got this was to use it as a recorder - It records ok from a computer - but, I consider this piece of junk is not fit for purpose, because you CANNOT attach a microphone to it. Yet the instructions say you can (Sony say you cant) So what is the point of being a recorder? This, therefore, renders it useless! a cheap MP3 player will suffice, also less demanding on batteries and probably less bulky too.
You do not get much in the way of useful accessories with this product - like a mains adaptor - this is something else to pay for!

cart before horse
This machine would actually be worthy of a 5 star rating if you could actually buy the all important 1GB discs! Sony say that they will probably be available in 3 to 6 months! My particular circumstances mean that it's a waste of my time recording on to normal MD's only to have to record everything all over again if the 1GB discs ever become available - I have no computer. So Philips HDD120 here we come!
It gets the job done
Works perfect but what seems to me is that the all components have a lower quality if compared to previous versions by Sony.
