Verstile and excellent performance... an all-round winner

(5 out of 5) by Wibles on Dec 26, 2003 (Oxfordshire, UK)
Working in IT, having a family superbly proficient with the video camera, relatives in the US and Canada and a hankering for storing memorable family moments means that we had to look for a DVD unit that could take just about very possible variation of DVD and CD format we could find. This cheap, cost-effective unit does anything but compromise on quality.

It plays everything we have and plays it well. SVCD's are excellent, both sorts of DVD encoding work; DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, multi-regional 1 and 2, MP3 CDs and to cap it all, it even plays regular DVDs from the shops. If you get daring and hook it up to an entertainment centre then the complete audio-visual experience is astounding for such a small unit.

The controls are excellent, intuitive and simple enough that even Grandmas at Christmas can use it. Scanning and searching are smooth and responsive with no annoying delay when a button is pressed. The MP3 browser is a winner at parties (for both us and the kids).

Sony have certainly pulled out all the stops with this one. What I wonder is why anyone would buy a more expensive DVD device?

Sony quality, family fun, excellent price = 5 stars

WHAT A PLAYER..............WOW!

(5 out of 5) by M. Smith on Feb 8, 2004 (northants, uk)
What can i say about this DVD player, well nothing thats not been said already, before i got this player i was using my PS2 to play DVD's however, i imported a R1 DVD 'Seabiscuit', and needed to splash out on a player with multi-region capabilities to play it on.

I did lots of research before making my choice, and i was certainly not disappointed! 5 minutes after it arrived and i was watching my R1 DVD brilliant.

I was not expecting to notice the difference in quality between my PS2 and this player but boy was i wrong!

The sound is out of this world, and watching 'Seabiscuit' which is about a racehorse, i actually felt like i was at the races! The sound of there hooves was echoing all around me. The picture quality is also superb, Black really is black WOW!

I love everthing about this DVD even the opening tray is wonderfully smooth, this may sound sad but i have spent more than a few minutes operating the tray!

To sum up then, top brand, top player and for under 80 pounds what a bargain!

This player unchipped in a famous high street catalogue is 99 pounds so if your looking for a top DVD player look no further this is the best!

The Best of the Best

(5 out of 5) by Al Mellet on Apr 17, 2004 (High Wycombe)
This is the best Multi-region DVD Player I have ever bought, and I have gone through a lot. I've travelled the world and there is not one DVD it doesn't play. Hong Kong - USA

*****************************************************NOTE************************************************************** If your DVD's that's not region 2 play only in Black And White. Get a Scart Lead With all the 21pins. The CABLE that's in the boxs will NOT give u colour.

Well try it. You won't be Disappointed!!! AND it's the Cheapest.

suprisingly thin! Money well spent

Which is a good thing, because now I can squeeze it on top of my dtsdecoder and use the space from my previous dvd player for otherperipherals.
Just remember, if you do have a dts/dolby digital 5.1 decoder, to run thequick setup and make sure ur dvd player audio is set through either youroptical or coaxial outputs, otherwise you'll be tearing your hair outwondering why you're not getting 5.1 surround sound. Also make sure youhave a PAL 60 compatible TV, or else regions displayed in NTSC will playblack and white on your TV.
I've tested it so far with region 1,2,3 and 4, most play fine, without anybreakage in the middle of films, when films jump to the 2nd layer of thedisk, there is no pause which previous dvd players have known to do.
It's easy to operate, gives great picture and sound quality, has manualadjust of the bit rate so you can fine tune your dvd quality, to howeversmooth or sharp you like it to be. It fits into most cabinets due to it'ssize and looks great in any living room. This is a must buy, it'scompatible with all regions and plays any dvd diskette you put into it.

multi region problems

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Feb 19, 2004
the dvd player is good looking, easy to use and a great price. i chose multiregion as i am a film student and often get region 1 DVDs. however, although it plays some, it does not play all of them. for instance i have bought three copies of lost in translation from hong kong, canada and america and it simply shows the message cannot play. if this is the case, maybe its better to get a cheaper single region DVD and hack it. so although initially it looks great, ultimately it is disappointing. i would say buy cheaper and frequently replace to stay one step ahead of the big companies and their party pooping encoding.
