This Epson printer is quite good and fast. It has a good print quality even for photos.
Its disadvantages are its size (it's quite big) and that it makes a lot of noise when it prints.
Nevertheless, if you don't care about its cons its a really good and reliable printer.
Dont waste your money
This printer was the most temperamental device I have ever had the misfortune to use! I wasted more ink clearing clogged print heads than I used printing! I found I would turn the printer on, get one rubbish print, clean the heads, get a mediocre print, clean the heads again, get an acceptable print and then when I printed a second image, its was back to rubbish again! I used Epson original cartridges at £19.99 a pop and regret every bringing the printer home! Epson have made some terrific printers (see my review of their R200) but this is terrible, cheap, clunky and nasty! Amazon carries a wide range of printers, stop looking at this review and go find yourself a printer worth spending your money on!
Very annoying printer
I know that nobody would buy this printer now, and I wonder why I have used mine for so long. The 830U has presided over my decision to use professional print services for photos, and has seen some of my angriest moments. This is something of a valediction.
Its chief failings are:
1. Heads are never clean. Printout always streaked and messy. How often I have sat and run the print/clean/print diagnostics over and over.
2. Paper feed is fiddly, often fails/jams for thicker papers.
3. If color cartridge runs out, you cannot print in black and white, it won't let you.
4. Cartridges are expensive.
My next printer will not be an Epson. The HP flat-bed feed seems superior, unless you want to print on CDs. A flat-bed feed fits in more paper, and your kids won't raid it as a sure place to find something to write on.
In one word: POOR.
The Epson Stylus Photo 830U is a printer that can print great pictures. Unfortunately, for some unfathomable reason, 95% of the time it just doesn't.
Images come out with inkless streaks, regardless of how many head cleanings you perform. Even text pages look like they've been printed with a machine from the 80's, let alone pictures.
IMPOSSIBLE to just reload the paper tray once the paper runs out: should this occur, be prepared for a long session of noises coming from inside the printer, and "Paper not loaded correctly" messages. No matter how many times you re-position the paper, switch the machine on and off, or whatever other action, the paper will just not be accepted. The secret is to never let the paper run out completely, but it will occasionally happen. The only thing to do is to wait until next day, and as if by miracle, the printer will work again, even if the paper is in exactly the same position.
Printer cartridges are becoming impossible to find, and at a whopping 21 pound for black and 27 pound for colour, they can't be called cheap either. You can't print black if colour runs out.
I remember printing a good few pictures, but then it never happened again.
Unreliable, moody, a piece of junk if I ever saw one.
Epson Stylus Photo 830U
I was given this printer by a friend of my mum's who was upgrading, he told me I could get amamzing images if I tweaked the settings.
I spent over a year attempting to tweak those settings.. Let's just say thank god I didn't pay for it.
Over all I found this printer temperamental and noisy. Not to mention the poor quality printouts despite cleaning the nozzle heads every 35 seconds or so, paper jammed easily, horrific to take apart to fix. Add to this that to buy a set of Epson ink cartridges would set me back over £50 (I'm a student!!) and even then I wouldn't be able to print anything worth handing in to my tutors.
I cannot wait until I get a new printer, my advice is DO NOT buy this unless you are into dodgy streaky prints and slowly ending your life. Time better spent on ones studies methinks!
