ADAPTEC VideOh DVD Media Centre

(4 out of 5) by Guy Viegas on Nov 7, 2003 (United Kingdom)
Within a few minutes I found myself copying a Video onto my hard drive, whilst checking what I can do on the encoding side of things. Very comprehensive piece of video converting kit, and perfect for creating your own media centre. Very easy to use, and handle.

Only downpart is the time it takes to copy a video, as that could be a little better, but nevertheless, once copied, and then burnt onto DVD in MPEG2 encoded format, the quality makes it a very worthwhile piece of equipment to add to your PC.

A must have

Approach with caution

I bought this item to replace my aging Miro DC30 video capture card. I used it for a couple of hours then put it back in the box for good.

The install was easy and the bundled software looks idiot proof, but the quality of the video capture was terrible. Using an s-video source it dropped frames all over the place and the resulting video also had several severe encoding errors.

My guess is that the problem is in trying to do the MPEG encoding in real time, but my PC is twice as fast as the minimum spec so I wasn't expecting problems.

Disappointing

Hardware is slow (around 2 sec delay between TV and Videoh), it stop responding when you start recording programs on 2nd monitor, no record button on remont control (!?) and it uses no standard video capture format so you can not capture from it in Windows Movie Maker, Sent it as video source in MSN Messanger or use it as source in MS Windows Encoder, but software is not bad but you can't use it if device is not installed.

WOW!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Oct 26, 2005
Did exaclty what it said on the box!
Converted hundreds of videos to DVD over the Summer as well as some of my fav. T.V. shows!

No problems at all. If your computer meets the minumum requirements it should run like a dream! The bundled software was all good, all very easy to use. Did exactly what it said on the box at pretty good speeds. Worth the money!!!

Does exactly as it says on the box!

Used this excellent little device to transfer my video collection onto DVD-R's.

Had very few problems with drivers or the bundled software, although it must be said encoding takes some serious processor power and RAM, so if you've got anything other than the latest spec PC, you might have problems with lock-up's and crashes (I used Athlon 64 3200 with 512MB of RAM running under XP home).

Had no problems with converting video's of over 2hrs long onto a DVD, although the video tape must be in good condition in order for it to encode without dropping frames and making the audio out of sync with the picutre.

All in all a good purchase - it did exactly what I bought it for.
