This really is one great bit of kit. I have a desktop, laptop and NTL broadband. The router allows 4 wired network connections so I didn't have to buy a wireless card for my desktop. Setup was Plug and Play and instantly gave me a home network and configurable firewall.
I bought a Netgear Wireless 54G PCMCIA Adapter for my laptop and that was also very straight forward. I get 100% signal strength all over the house.
If you're tempted then go for it.
Very easy and simple to setup
I purchased this Netgear Router as I sometimes work from home, supporting a network out of hours and wanted to use my existing Telewest broadband connection to VPN in to the companies network. The router automatically detected the connection from the cable modem and my home PC was up and running in seconds, it then took me a matter of minutes to setup the wireless connection from my work laptop - I plumpted for the 128 bit WEP encryption and I also used the Access Control List for greater security. The web interface is very friendly and easy to use.
Its been extremely realiable so far and is a very tidy, neat device that discreetly flashes away to let you know that its connected and all is well.
There are quite a few more features in the router, NAT, static routes, etc which I will probably never use but are there if you have a small business setup.
In all, I'm very pleased and recommend it.
compatability - ntl + medion pc + ibm t41
I am an ntl broadband user. My main pc is a medion p4 desktop which is now connected by cable thru the router. My laptop connects wirelessly.
I am very impressed with the router as my connection speed on the desktop has increased since installation and the laptop connects perfectly every time from every room in the house and even the end of the garden - and this is despite having a communications antenna at the end of the street to give as much interference as possible!!
It was very easy to set up but did require a little tweaking to enable security options whilst still allowing the laptop to find it.
Overall, very happy with my purchase.
EASY TO SET-UP WIRELESS ROUTER
Well, I've had my WGR614 up and running for a couple of weeks now and it's a great piece of kit. It was incredibly easy to set up - being a networking newbie, I chose the wizard option to configure it, and basically it just told me I already had a valid Internet connection, so nothing else was needed (no firmware updates to download, no software to install, everything's done via the browser interface). I was up and surfing within ten minutes ! Oh, I did have to plug my two PCs into it and connect it to the cable modem (tough job !).
I'm not ready to go wireless just yet, so I've simply switched off that function until I need it. Even with one of its main uses out of action until I buy my wireless cards, I've still got a four-port Fast Ethernet switch, a router and a firewall, all in one, for £90 - a bargain !
I have accessed my router from work (not for any real purpose, just to show off to the guys in the office, really !). It's even a good-looking box, sleek and silver, matching my cable modem ... a vast improvement on the clunky dark blue boxes of yesteryear.
So, if you're looking for an 802.11g wireless router, BUY THIS ! If you've got an existing 802.11b network and you're're looking to upgrade your wireless router, BUY THIS ! If, like me, you're planning to go wireless soon, BUY THIS !
PS. In case you're wondering, no, I don't work for Netgear !
Really pleased
Have had this router up and running for over one month now - installation was quick and easy and signal strength is excellent. Get cable broadband from ntl and originally bough a Belkin router - this was hopeless and kept cutting out. This Netgear product has not let me down once and I would have no hesitation to recommend it to anyone using ntl broadband
