Volume control is a nice idea but ...

Whenever I need a new set of headphones I always look out for the MDR range from Sony. I go through a pair a year simply because I tend to throw them into my gym bag or get tangled in the cable when I am exercising. Also, they get really wet from all the sweating and I have to blow dry the ear pieces. It is a wonder they work at all!

This particular model includes a small volume slider which, in theory, enables you to adjust the output without fiddling with your Walkman or MP3 player. It does in fact lower the volume but you end up with the sound only in one ear, or you hear a lot of scratching and interference. A complete waste of time so I just ignore the button altogether. They are still the most comfortable, best sounding, in-ear phones I have ever used and will keep buying this brand until Sony decides to invent something better!

Fantastic headphones, but may not last very long

(4 out of 5) by R. Rose on Mar 4, 2008 (UK)
I've been buying these headphone for years. Good sound, and I love the volume slider button, it's so handy. They tend to last about a year to a year and a half before I lose sound in one side of them, probably because they get bashed around my bag, but unfortunately that can't be avoided.

I keep buying them because they are comfortable, normal in-ear headphones tend to fall out of my ears, and also because I find they have the best control of noise leakage compared to other headphones that I have tried...unlike a lot of other people I like to be able to listen to my music at a good volume without disturbing everyone else around me!

Would not recommend at all, the headphones do not keep on your head properly and not excellent quality

Sony - painless earphones

As a previous user of many 'cheaper' headphones I have yet to find a more comfortable, in-ear headphones than these. The volume control is a novellty I have not had before, my previous headphones being the MDR-8L but it doesn't detract from the phones at all.

I have to state for the record I am not an audiophile - I am not loo4ing for the best quality at all costs I am looking for something that is value for money, comfortable and can be worn for long periods of time. These do the job. All other 'in ear' buds, squishy gel things, Ipod funnels etc etc etc become uncomfortable very quickly #especially in one ear that has had some changing of shape due to rugby - cauliflowered!#but these are a joy. They never hurt even after whole day wearing and on long flights.

Sound quality is as good as I need I do not get any buzzing, pops, whistles or general static type noises even when I use 'double base'feature of my MP3 equaliser. The volume button #sliding thing# works in a fashion. It only acts as an inline 'impedenc to the sound coming fromthe MP3 therefore if the MP3 is loud sliding the headphone volume to it lowest setting will not make the headphones silent it will only impede the noise level down - I generally have the volume either MAX #for when riding my bike# or lowest for when I am sat at my desk in the office the middle range is all but unused.

Quality issues - be aware, they are not going to last you forever. I do tend to abuse mine by placing them in pockets, gym bags, around my neck where they get caught on things etc and as a result I have to replace them anything between 12 and 24 months but at £10 that doesn't seem too bad. They would ast longer if I took more care but I don't.

On the whole great value for money headphones that without any doubt in my mind are the most comfortable I ahve ever worn #even better than some of these ridiculouusly over padded earphone things#. They are very light and are held in place by the 'over the head' band so you don't need to 'screw' them into your earhole so they don't fall out when you are running, cycling etc.
