Kiss 450 DVD - fantastic concept, but rough around the edges

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 2, 2003
I purchased this player recently after having used my computer connected to my tv. This player promised to deliver what many users have been hankering after, particularly with respect to the divx capabilities.

Pros:
- Flawless playback of Xvid encoded material
- Good playback of other formats, including divx. 3.11
- Digital sound (AC3/DD5.1/DTS) via coaxial output is perfect, as is audio cd playback if on-board DAC is avoided.
- Connection facility; component video output is welcome, due to the better colour separation (evident on large-screen tv)
- Easy-to-use setup facility for intial connection
- Upgradability provided via firmware upgrades
Cons:
- Player looks tacky and lacks presence on the av-rack
- Provided remote control is very cheap and un-tactile; poor range of IR receiver means remote can only be used within sight of DVD player
- Choppy performance of fast-action divx 3.11 movies
- DVD picture quality is surpassed by cheaper toshiba DVD players
- Player sometimes freezes (crashes?) if one plays audio cd's after using a cdr disc containing MP3 files
- Unable to fast-forward/rewind DIVX movies (use search facility instead).

Overall, this is a brave attempt and I definately approve purchasing this product.

Great DVD player

This Dvd player is fanastic! It plays everthing you can throw at it and the most important thing is that you can get the latest firmware from the manufacturers website which means every time the manufacturer improves the player you can too by downloading a file from the website then buring it to a CD and putting it in the player. The only disadvantage is that to get the best performance from the player you need a CD burner on your PC.
With the latest firmware all current DIV-X formats are supported and you can now fast forward and rewind them. Ive had no problems with the player freezing and you should buy one.

not quite what i expected

After having this player recommended by a mate who i trusted implicitly i have to say very dissapointed.

I am not the most technically minded type of people but endured lots of problems with playback of most avi format cd's

Picture freezing would be the worst closely followed by the machine itself locking up and having to be switched off to proceed.

I have just purchased the medion md40814 which is £30.00 cheaper and looks like a DVD player another critiscm of the kiss player it is soooo bulky and old fashioned looking!

Plays everything you throw at it, but very unstable

I bought one of these last year, initally as my main DVD player. Mainly for the array of logos on the front showing it can play everything from MP3 to AVI to DIVX. ..and to be fair it does exactly that. However it soon became the bedroom dvd player as sometimes, irrespective of whether it is a pre-recorded dvd, a dvd+, an MPEG file, whatever..it hangs. the picture gets jerky, then it freezes, then you have to "re-boot" it.. even then it doesn't always correct it. You can't even eject the disk. When it works, it's great. But when it starts having a tantrum it becomes a complete pain. I've tried official and unofficial firmware updates but nothing fully corrects the problem. I guess that's the price you pay for making a DVD player more like a PC, sometimes it's going to crash!
