Good Printer, Hopeless Driver

Feb 18, 2004 - By Amazon Customer

The Epson C900 prints as well as any laser printer should; its toner consumption is reasonable and exactly as advertised. Everything handles well - paper in, paper out, toner replacement, clearing jams.
But the driver - oh dear. It seems incapable of true background printing - everything has to wait until the printer is warmed up and rolling. It usually won't spool jobs properly when printing is in progress. If used with the memory originally supplied, it can only print small images. Its better when equipped with 128Mb memory, but doesnt seem able to use virtual memory. If you give it a lot of stuff to print it will do a page or two then slip into a mode in which it only prints half a page - or less, and to get out of this mode you usually have to switch the printer AND computer off. It hangs the whole machine frequently - to the extent that if there's any jobe to be done with a finite time limit, I tend to put things on a neighboring ink jet instead.
These comments all apply to the Windows 98 driver. I'm going to try it with XP shortly.
