The Best MD Player around!

(5 out of 5) by Jonathan Williams on Jul 15, 2003 (Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom)
What can I say?! This minidisc player is brilliant value, because it includes an AM/FM radio as well as 32x high quality recording and of course plays them! The sound quality is excellent, and the remote makes programming a whole lot easier, because you can clip it anywhere. It can have a remarkable 50 hours play on a single AA battery (70 if used in conjunction with the rechargable) and comes complete with charging cradle and all necessary cables to get started.
I found it very easy to learn the controls of the recording and playing and could probably control it with my eyes shut: it is that simple!
All in all, this is a fantastic package, well worth the price. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a minidisc player!

Top buy

This is a great minidisc player and does exactly waht it says on the desription. The quality is top even when on the MDLP function. I found out after purcahsing the mz-nf810 that using an optical lead you can transfer music cd's straight onto your minidisc player from a sony portable cd player. This is great as when my computer is temprementle i can still transfer my music. The radio is quality and so are the recordings from it(It might take a bit of time to get your head round how to record but after reading the manual is quite simple).
Appearance wise its cool and the colour is slightly different than on the picture. Its a lighter silver and looks nicer than i expected it to, and nicer than it does in the picture.
The only slight problem is that if you want to use the player without the radio attatchment then the headphones are extremely short and you will need to buy some longer ones inless you intend on wearing the player in a high jacket pocket, but any other pockets would make it impossible for them to reach your ears.
If you want a minidisc player there is not better one on the market with these great features. The radio, MDLP mode, and NETMD gives it all the added functions you could possibly want. There is a case altough you may want to purchase a more substantial one or one with an armband.
(nothing to do with the actually minidisc player but it might be an idea to buy minidiscs that come in a box as they are easy to misplace and it keeps them in order. also remember that the sound quality can depend on the type of minidisc you by and the manufacturor. i have not had a faulty disc yet but a friend had one that just wouldnt let you record onto it. even with the best manufacturors this is enevatble every once in a while.)

Fantastic!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 25, 2003
Well, I got this as my first Minidisc recorder, mainly for the reason that portable CD players are far too big. I considered an mp3 player, but I read about the Minidisc format and the fact that each disc can hold 160MB of music in a format as small as mp3 convinced me to buy Minidisc.
The unit itself is compact, and "feels" very nice indeed. It has a metallic finish that seems tough aswell as looking nice. The buttons "click" nicely and the unit seems sturdy and well built. The remote control is nice, but is a bit too big. I saw the remote on a friends MZN710 and thought it would be of around the same size, but because of the incorporated radio it is a bit too big and heavy. However, this is not a real problem. The radio reception is acceptable, but not great.
The battery life on the unit is quite astounding. I was used to my old Sony CD player using two AA batteries in a couple of days listening, but I have listened to my MZNF810 for nearly 20 hours in five days off a full charge, and the battery indicator is still at two bars, and this is without the attached AA batttery.
The software included with the unit is perhaps the only bad point about the whole package. I installed it, the PC recognised the Minidisc straight off, and was set to go, but even with the detailed manual it took me half an hour to find out how exactly to import music to the "Music Drive" and record it. As I first used it, I tried to import my playlist of 300 or so songs, and it locked up straight away. My Windows XP system has not locked up once in more than two months, but this managed to do so! Although it could be argued that it was because I tried to import too many songs at once, Windows Media Player and Winamp both handle the playlist easily.
Once you've got used to the limitations of the software, it is fairly easy to use. Tracks are transferred at very high speed, and the transferring process is simple and works very well. The claim of "5 hours 20 minutes on one disc" is however, a bit false. In LP4 mode, sound quality is noweher near great; it is approximately equal to 64Kbps mp3, which is OK, but LP2 souns much better and I have used only LP2 in my recordings, as it gives the best time to quality compromise.
All in all, despite a few flaws, I would highly recommend this recorder to anyone.

Don't know what they're moaning about

(5 out of 5) by R. Haig on Jul 24, 2004 (Scotland)
After reading some of the less-than-complementary reviews on here, I was slightly apprehensive about ordering this minidisc player. Thankfully I went ahead with it, and it is now the new love of my life.

The software runs like a dream - after a few minutes, I was transferring music back and forwards with ease and it hasn't crashed yet. For someone who's been operating with analogue recordings for the past few years its a welcome relief!

The manual may look daunting, but even then, after a quick flick through it you know the basics and can just skim to the appropriate section if you get a bit stuck later.

The battery life is as impressive as it says, the sound quality is excellent and the radio works well. The design of the player is excellent and fits perfectly in a pocket.

There are a few little niggles. Like others have said, the remote control can be very irritating. The placing of the "radio button means you often flick it on, turning off the minidisc player as you try and clip the remote onto anything. The length of the headphones is not really that adequate - I've already swapped them for a new pair.

Overall, this is an excellent model and if you too are swithering, believe me - go for it. This has been my best music-related purchase in years.

Sony MZ-NF810

(5 out of 5) by Brian Hugh on Apr 24, 2004 (Hampshire, UK)
The reviews and ratings on this page automatcally show how brillant andpopualar the NF810 is in terms of quality and style, so there's no pointin writing loads about the player itself, but i'd like to emphasis thatthe SonicStage software is not as bad as you may think, though it can betricky at times. The software is actually very easy to use and if youwant to download a substancail number of songs, just be patient because ittakes quite a while to transfer especially with an aging PC. One downsideto mention is that the disc capacity is quite low, as i had found it couldonly store around 40 songs on one 80 minute disc (in LP2 mode) which isnot a lot, but none-the-less still a brilliant piece of gadget andderserves 5 stars!
