definatly the best mini disc avaluble from sony..it writes at 64x and it has a romovable battry which you dont get in any other 64x minidisc.. teh battery life is more than twice the other new minidisc... it has practicly no disadvantages to its siblings besides the fact that it is cheaper.

Great - but MD is now showing its age

This player would have scored 5 stars if I didn't need to keep swapping disks all the time. Even with maximum compression, 7-8 hours is the maximum you can record on to one disk. That might sound a lot, but we have come to expect more given the hundreds of hours of playback from Apple's IPOD and similar hard disk based players.

Removing storage capacity from the equation and you have a very good machine.
Small, neat and quite easy to use, although the in-line volume control is fiddly and I am forever double-checking to make sure I have turned the thing off to ensure that the battery doesn't run down. As for battery life - I reckon on 4-5 hours before a recharge and double that if you plug the optional single cell battery into the base.

Sound is very good although maximum volume level is poor and to my ears I could not tell much difference between zero and maximum compression. A graphic equalizer is provided with virtual surround and various modes such as club and stadium. However, after an hour or so the novelty ran out and I now just keep it on standard no frills playback. SSShhhhock protection is excellent and I have yet to experience any break in playback, including hundreds of hours in the gym on cross trainers and Concept II rowers.

Sony provides Sonic Stage, PC based software which manages your music collection. It does the job OK, but can best be described as condescending. It makes you check CDs in and out of the PC in an attempt to stop you copying CDs to remote players.

If Sony had released this 6-7 years ago they might have had much bigger success with MD. As it is, surely it's only a matter of time before Sony decides that it has recovered its original investment and moves permanently towards more capacious media.

Tip: About the Disks

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Oct 12, 2003
I own a Minidisk Recorder For a While now (since 1996) I Have 2 of them Soon to be 3 and I learnt a few tricks.
After awhile If your MD Skips or mutes or never plays all the way throw it may be because there's a Layer of Dust and pocket dirt Building up inside the disk its self.

There's 2 ways of cleaning the Disks but I'm only going to cover the one way.

What you Need:
Get hold of One Camera Lens Cleaning Brush kit (Needs to be Very soft) and A Can of Pressured Air (Used for cleaning PCs and Keyboard with)

1. Use a Credit card, NUS Card, to Open the Disk Protective Flap door up. > Do it Gently (Looking down on a Disk arrow away from you: The Direction the disk Goes into the Player There is a Small Lock on the right hand side in the Grove on the Edge by the Protective flap on the Right hand side, Slide your Card into it and Pull the Flap Opposite the direction the Arrow is Pointing on the disk)

2. Use the Can of air Both Sides of the Disk To Blow any Dust out.

3. Using the Brush, Wipe from centre to edge. Rotating the disk slowly in little bits.Buy turning the Middle spindle (Wipe > Rotate till you can see dust > Wipe > Rotate. Repeat till all the Dust is gone off all the disk on both sides)

Try Not to get Finger marks or even scratches on the Disks surface (Either Side!!) they are Very hard to get off.
Also Get Hold of a Minidisk Lens Cleaning Disk for cleaning the Player use it 2 times a Month and Change the lens cleaner Every year
