Good spec digital camera at a bargain price

Apr 26, 2003 - By S Veitch (Blaydon on Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom)

The A300 provides an excellent level of spec (3MP) definition for the price of a lesser digital camera. I've had the camera a couple of weeks now and it has performed well in both outdoors (mostly landscape photography) and indoors. The camera also allows a remarkable level of detail to be captured considering the price especially in the Macro mode. Downloading to a PC/Mac is a fairly effortless procedure and software and a USB cable are provided for this.

On the downside the camera feels a little lightweight and probably wouldn't withstand too much punishment. It also eats batteries (especially with the flash turned on) so rechargeables, preferably Ni-MH's, are a must. The software shipped with the camera is also a rather basic and if you are planning a long trip a larger capacity Memory/Flash card could be useful.

Overall it provides great value for money and I haven't seen anything else with a comparable level of spec for the cash.

Great Little Camera

Jun 10, 2003 - By B. Wright (United Kingdom)

I really wanted a digital camera but was worried about not being able to get one that was worth having i.e. taking decent pics, in my range range of approx £150.

Then i saw the canon a300 and was pleasantly suprised. This is a very small camera yet takes superb shots. It has a host of features that you wouldnt expect on cameras sub £300!

The only downside really imo is battery length. The supplied ones ran out in less than an hr for me :( So i would not get this camera unelss your prepered to buy some decent rechargable batteries. Having said that though i believe this goes for all cameras.

Also dont be fooled by the 5.1x zoom it is digital meaning you can end up with grainy shots if your using full resoultion and quality at maximum zoom.

I have now also purchased some rechargable batteries and a viking 128mb card to go with this camera and am very happy with it.

Buy one, its a brilliant little camera !

Apr 11, 2003 - By Amazon Customer

This is my 1st digital camera. I wanted at least 2MP, so I was very pleased when I saw that the Canon model was a 3MP, for such a reasonable price.

I received this camera a couple of days ago and I am very impressed with the photo quality, even in the poorest conditions it performs brilliantly!

Canon describe it as there entry level camera, saying this, camera is PACKED with quality functions including operational sounds (e.g startup, shutter click etc..) + a built in video camera function with sound too.

The only downside is that it eats batteries(!), but I think this is a characteristic of most digital cameras, so I recommend you in invest in some NiMh rechareable AA batteries and charger too if you are gonna get one.

If your looking for a quality digital camera, at a reasonable price, I don't think you can beat this one!

Nice Compatible Digital Camera

Mar 22, 2003 - By Amazon Customer

A Definite Buy. Its a nice camera with main functions to be used just like others. The name Canon itself give its last touches to the products name and does exactly what one will want to use it for. However, it is not one of the best in the market. Canon A300 is an old model with 3.2 Pixels which is exceptionally great and with other functions that other cameras have. Reason for my rating 4 is given because its nice and compatible, very stylish (not so big) and with exceptionally good 3.2 MP and impressive 1.5 inch screen. It works great using Auto, Manual, Stitch Assist, Movie shooting modes. Very impressive. But it doesnot come with a battery charger as you can get with other packages. However, other cameras like Fuji finepix and HP are the ones that are new in the market with more functions to play with and used solely by digital fanatics or professional use (Bulky as well). If one is simply looking to buy for taking pictures with not more professional use, then I recommend Canon A300 as 5 stars rating. But, If someone wants to buy a digital camera for professional use or would like to have exceptionally good pictures taken, then the most recommended one would be Canon Powershot G3 with 4 MP. The rating 4 stars for canon A300 is compared to the ones in the market these days with exceptionally multifunctions and compatibility.

Excellent value entry level digital camera

Apr 11, 2003 - By Amazon Customer

This is the first digital camera I've pruchased and overall I'm very happy with it. At the price it offers excellent value for money, with many of the features of camera's twice the cost. The automatic settings take care of all the features or you can adjust these manually if you prefer.

The software supplied allows image download via a USB port and manipulation on a PC. I've used it with my laptop and it worked very well. The movie mode allows up to 3 mins of movies in avi format. The camera is a plastic finish so if you're after something more exotic (and pricey) go for the Ixus V3.

My only complaints are that it didn't come with a case, the compact flash card supplied was only 16Mb and it drains normal batteries in no time, so make sure you get rechargables.

I've now purchased a Viking 128Mb card from Amazon and look forward to taking the camera on holidays and giving it a true road test very soon.
