Outstanding: Videologic ZXR-550 Speakers

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Mar 22, 2003
A beautiful surround speaker package ! The Videologic system comes with all the cables you need to connect to either a PC 5.1 surround card or a stand alone DVD player and a generous amount of speaker wire. The speakers are very small compared to most PC speakers, but perform unlike the majority, the sound is crisp and clear and with the sub woofer pack punch. Even at high volume there is no speaker distortion.

I never thought that a PC speaker setup would be anywhere near comparable to a full blown home cinema setup, this is the closest you can get for the price.

A fantastic buy, which has exceeded all my expectations by far. Highly recommended

Excellent Speaker Package

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jun 7, 2003
I bought these speakers a few days ago to replace the small and tinny speakers that came with my computer (had to be done) and the first thing I've noticed is that the satallites are so heavy!! My mother always taught me that if it's heavy it's either good quality or a rock, thankfully these are good quality. The sound they push out is execellent and I havn't managed to overoad them yet. The sub is also fantastic, can pump out some hard base and if you get the right song you can get subliminal base, very nice.
My only word of warning is that to make sure you have a 6 channel (5.1) sound card or that your DVD can handle a 5.1 speaker system as when I first plugged mine in (extremely easy) sound only came from 3 speakers. Thankfully sound cards arn't that expensive.

In all a very good, stylish and powerful speaker system.

Fantastic speakers at a fantastic price!

(5 out of 5) by Alex Smith on Oct 24, 2003
A few months ago I decided that I would like to further enhance my system. I decided to invest in some 5.1 surround sound speakers. After reading some excellent reviews of the ZXR-550 speakers I decided to purchase them. Let me tell you... the reviews weren't wrong!

Firstly, I want to congratulate Amazon for their swift and reliable delivery. My speakers arrived only two days after ordering them. They were in good condition, and within 35 minutes I had them up and running, blasting out music and annoying my mom!

Before I comment on the quality of the speakers, let me just reinforce one thing. These speakers are really only for PCs; although in a small room I suppose they could work as DVD player speakers. I have read some reviews on Amazon stating that the speakers are terrible linked up to a DVD player in a large room and that they are a real disappointment. Well... as far as I’m concerned they are certainly not a disappointment (linked up to a PC that is).

The speakers both look and feel solidly built. You realise this as soon as you get them out of the box as the speakers are remarkably heavy for their size. They are also aesthetically pleasing, with a cool blue LED power-on light and smart silver finish. The volume controls are sturdy, and nothing is likely to break or fall off.

The speakers themselves produce some great sound. The five speakers sound good in any situation; games, movies or just music. The sub is also a nice piece of equipment, producing a deep satisfying bass. The 3D surround also works well (especially in Counter-strike). However, you will only experience 3D sound from DVDs if you have a surround sound decoder. I haven't got one of these but movies still sound great! Luckily, there is no need for a decoder to experience surround sound games.

The speakers come with 5 desk stands and 2 wall mounting brackets. This gives you the option to mount the 2 rear speakers on a wall if need be. They are only plastic, but they do the job. Also, the installation was reasonably simple with the help of the manual. You do need a sound card that supports 5.1 sound though, otherwise only two speakers will function correctly.

I really cannot emphasise the quality of these speakers and how impressed I am with them. Not only do they produce quality sound, at a quality price, but they also look great too! These speakers are ideal if you are looking for a cheap upgrade to enhance your system. Highly recommended!

Sleek, Stylish and Sexy

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on May 19, 2003
I cant really recommend these speakers enough. They are small, stylish, sexy and sound perfect (even at full blast) and are at a great price. You have everything you need in the box from the leads for both a 5.1 PC Soundcard and a standard DVD Player to the wall mounts to if you want to set them up around your room.
You can set them up in about 10 min and no software is with it so even a real tech beginner can get these going.
Its a must buy for anyone who wants to take music/films and gaming to the next level.

An excellent set of speakers

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Nov 17, 2003
These are the best set of computer speakers that cost less then £100. They produce excellent sound when connected to my SB Live 5.1 Digital card. The sound is always natural and very clear at high or low volume. You also get all the bits you could ever want included in the box. For example, you get some plastic brackets for putting the 2 rear speakers on a wall which are very handy.

When you open the box, you will notice how heavy the satellites are. From personal experience, I find that heavier speakers sound better and these are no exception. Another delight is the physical size of the subwoofer, although due to the focus of these speakers on natural sound the 25W from the sub is not very imposing, especially when playing music. If you want music with a lot of added bass, I would go for Creative speakers (which normally have a sub power of less than 18W I think!) The only real problem I have with these speakers is the slight amount of transformer noise which can be heard when the speakers are switched on but no sound is playing. This however is inevitable for speakers which have an internal power supply, but makes no difference to sound quality in this case!

If you are after a half decent set of computer speakers, buy these!
