canon Ds review

(4 out of 5) by Darren Jacklin. Photographer on Feb 23, 2004 (MUNICH Germany)
Ive owned my Ds for a month now and for the most part I've been satisfied. The build quality and autofocus are as good as any pro level Canon camera. The image quality is in my opinion better than scanned slide. Obviously the major selling point for this somewhat overpriced camera in the full format chip and the 11.1 mega-pixels. The camera shoots 3fps with 10 frames in a row, this I find a bit limiting. A better deal for most Photographers will perhaps be the new 8mega-pixel Canon released in April. It has the same build quality as the Ds and shots 8.5fps with 40 frames in a row. It's also going to be priced more sensibly. It does, however, have a 1.3 focal length magnification so it might not be for wide-angle freaks. One last point, my 1st Ds body packed up for no reason on a shoot and Canon replaced it with a brand new body within 7days. I think good service is pretty important when investing in a camera that costs almost a much as a small car!

No competition for this top class camera

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jul 11, 2004
Beware the guy from Harlow - I think a section to the nearest mental hospital is appropiate - anyhow, as a national industrial photographer I can say with total conviction, that there is at present no camera in the WORLD (as a digital SLR) that comes anywher near the performance that the 1DS offers - if its used for your liveleyhood then this is the top in its field and well worth the £4999 that you can buy it for!

Why not for amateurs? (if you can afford it!)

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Feb 21, 2004
I have one of these and I am an amateur. It really is a superb bit of kit and has really made me think hard about whether I should ever be shooting film again. When you consider its capabilities and the price of equivalent resolution digital backs for medium format cameras, it is not that outrageously expensive (no, really). Since it feels like it is machined out of a solid block of magnesium (which it probably is) I doubt that you could easily break it, even if you tried to load it with film! The only reservation I would have is over the performance of the ultra wide Canon L zooms on the camera. It is a shame that Nikon do not make the 17-35 f2.8 AFS in an EOS mount, but you can't have everything.

EOS 1Ds THE BEST SO FAR ?

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Sep 18, 2003
Firstly this is a PROFESSIONAL CAMERA and is also the best digital camera on the open market today.Full frame 35mm viewing and you get what you see. I also have an EOS1D & a 10D.
I have not shot a roll of film for eighteen months and have never been busier.
Digital is here to stay. The 1Ds gives me the equivalent file to a 6 x 4.5 medium format camera.
Without the need of extensive bracketing. I shoot less, am in charge of the image and I'm happy.

Don't own this ... just wondering abot 0 stars

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 24, 2003
Don't quite know what product the "photo & electronics fan" was reviewing but seems it wasn't the 1Ds. First it is a digital camera so loading it with film might not work. Second, the complexity. What do you expect? It is a pro-level camera. I have the D60 and that is pretty basic. As soon as I have the cash I will try and get the 1Ds. Also not too sure how he "found it in bits" ... my experience with the Canon systems (as mentioned I have a D60 and also a 1V) is that they are pretty tough. Did amazon append his review to the wrong camera? If he wants a digital that he can also load with film and one that he can show to his mates might I suggest he get the new Leica dual format camera that will take both film and digital? Should be out next year.
