My previous DVD player (Toshiba SD100) went bang so I went looking for a top quality replacement.
I paid a lot more for a Pioneer 656.
Reckoned it would be worth it because it handles DVD-A and SACD playback, has internal decoding and multichannel line level outputs to connect to external amplification.
Well, it was worth it. It hasn't given a minute's trouble, gives superb pictures with great edge definition and stunning colour rendition.
Sound is the best I've heard yet (though I've no doubt that spending more will get better results I don't need any better than this) and that applies not just to films but also to my (albeit limited) DVD-A and SACD collection.
Only gripe is that the menu system is not all that clear in some areas but after a bit of hit and miss it's all set up fine now.
I would prefer a more solid feel to the unit too but, at the end of the day, what really counts is sound and vision quality and the 656 has that in abundance and it looks as good now as it did a year ago so I guess lightweight construction doesn't necessarily mean flimsy.
Great player - but is it really multiregion ???
This is a great dvd player with excellent picture quality. The player however is NOT multiregion even though it is advertised as being one.
