While searching high and low for the best player I could get for my money I kept seeing the dv-656A mentioned over and over. When you first see that little box, take it out and discover the sea of polystyrene and paper; you could be forgiven for wondering were your 300 quid went. Plug that little sucker in however, and in 10 minutes you will be able to play any of the multitude of discs that pioneer have enabled it to operate. It has the most straightforward and accessible on screen menu I have ever seen, only matched by its half inch thick instruction book.
If you were considering purchasing a brand like Sony, then consider this, pioneer are the only company [to my knowledge] to offer both SACD and DVD audio play back, this gives you the entire DVD audio range of titles as well, which easily sound as good if not better in some cases, than the SACD's. I am still undecided as to which performs better over all but I can certainly hear were my money went when I play back these discs.
Also consider that the next model up in this pioneer range costs a full 200 hundred more and the only discernable difference is that it has progressive scan. So if you have, or were considering, buying a plasma screen TV this is the only reason I can think off not to buy this player. I bought my first DVD player 4 years ago and was shocked when I first played a DVD video on the 656A because the picture seemed worse. Panicked, I opened the book and almost immediately discovered what was wrong. I switched it over to the right setting and now I can't understand how I ever put up with anything less. It's a fantastic picture allot better than I expected and the 5.1 and DTS play back is excellent as you would expect from a higher end player.
Four months on im still raving about this player and will probably continue to do so for some time, check out some of the other reviews on the internet if you still need convincing or want more technical information.
