My reason for selection was based purely on price and size/weight. After all I wanted to carry it around, but not take up any space and not worry too much if it gets lost/stolen.
From this trip I can say the following things:
1) As the memory card gets filled up (I have 2x64Mb cards and the standard 8Mb) the time to review pictures and switch the camera on/off increases. I was putting about 250photos at 1Mpix on the 64Mb card. Anything above about 100pictures and the camera takes noticeably longer to switch on and off (open and close the lens). This is due to it reading the card information before giving you control.
2) Standard AA batteries run out very quickly, especially with the screen turned on. The screen can be left off by default though.
3) Night photography was rather limited. The camera has trouble getting the exposure correct. Most photographs I took were too dark, insufficient flash I think.
4) The camera is very robust, and survived drops, sand, rain (although was rather misted up for a couple of days)
5) It is light and small, ideal for a pocket or backpack.
6) The click noise when a photo is taken could be louder, the number of people taking photos of me saying that they are not sure if the photo has been taken….!
7) Spot metering is a little hit and miss, (over/under exposure)
8) The photos even at 1Mpix are excellent quality and print really well. The size of files is good for emailing as well.
9) No shutter control for fancy stuff.
10) No lens cover, I always thought I would scratch it, however despite covering the camera in sand on a number of occasions, it is still reasonably unmarked, certainly not affecting the photographs, though it does grind now when I zoom in and out (sand trapped somewhere!!)
11) Fast zoom in and out, some cameras I saw had considerable delay on pushing the buttons.
12) The standard 8Mb card is next to useless, it holds no photo's at all (I recommend 32Mb+, 32Mb holds about 120 at 1Mpix and 60 at the highest 2Mpix resolution)
So to conclude I do think this is an ideal point and shoot camera for my trip and similar holidays, as these points are just small niggles, not show stoppers. For the price it is a gem of a camera forefilling all requirements.
Great camera at this price !
None of the problems seen on previous mail (yet)but I tested one in Jessops and the shutter didn't work.
I upgraded from an old Sony that cost me a packet and this is a million times better. If you have a Palm M5xx then you can pop the SD card (optional)straight in and it powers up and shows pics instantly.
I spent months reading magazine reviews but couldn't afford a decent camera before this came along.I think this is a winner !
Horrible and ugly!! but still.........
On the whole DO NOT EVEN THINK ON BUYING THIS CAMERA,
Not very impressed
The Gobbler
camera. However i shouldn't have listened i some respects. The nasty little creature just gobbles up batteries like the worlds gonna end tomorrow. So if this camera is for you then make sure you have an extra 2 'top quaility' batteries for every 15 minutes you have it on, because it is literaly a battery 'BOBBLER'.
Well, apart from this little hitch, the camera is ok. Oh sorry hold on, i forgot thats not all.
The nasty little creature also doesn't do what you ask it to. When you ask it to take a photo is totally ignores you. I dont know why but it just doesnt seem to know a simple instruction.
Next time i will go for the little more expensive camera and get a lot better quality camera.
WHAT EVER YOU DO THIS YEAR, DONT BUY THIS CAMERA.
