Nisis vs Wacom

Apr 30, 2003 - By Amazon Customer

All in all a very economial and good value product that is recommended as an entry level full sized graphics tablet. I use an over sized Wacom Intuos at work on a day to day basis, so it wasn't hard for me to spot the Nisis graphics tablets short comings. I wanted to buy something that was cheap, affordable and could be used at home to work on art and phorgraphs. The Nisis appeared to be a good deal and so far so good.

It basically performs as you would expect it to, i.e. you use the pen for drawing pictures and spraying your digital paint, as opposed to using a mouse in conjunction with your creative software.

Overall the Nisis is a fine tool for the price, but it has the following problems and glitches that are minor:

1) The mouse is generally okay, but it has rough edges around the outer casing and can be a little annoying.

2) Pen pressure - if you hold down for too long and too hard, the active window starts to shake from side to side.

3) The tablet works with most commercial applications such as Photoshop, Flash, Freehand, etc but it has trouble working with open source apps such as the GIMP

4) The Function Buttons that are labelled on tablet - THE TEXT FAR TOO SMALL! to read.

5) Unfortunately No Transparency Sheet for doing underlay tracing is included with this model. Most annoying.

6) Sensitivity - As pointed out the pen sensitivity is not the greatest and the Mouse click emulation on the Pen .I.E. Right Mouse button clicking, is pretty clumsy.

Hopes this helps.

Well worth it!

Mar 13, 2003 - By Amazon Customer

I had a tablet years ago, but was so small the control you had was all over the place.. so with this in mind, and knowing how bad these things can be, I was as you would expect a little pessimistic on buying a tablet at a cheap price..

But, thankfully I took a chance, and bought this one, and I can tell you.. It has not disappointed me, this tablet dose the job well, and what a price !!!

It dose come with a mouse that works in the same manner as the pen, but to tell you the truth I don't use it, I mean I already have a decent optical mouse, and the mouse you get with this, is not so sleek, the buttons are hard to press, and the movement is not smooth.. but I wisent bothered, I didn't get a tablet to use a mouse anyway..

So the tablet its self, the driver software is great stuff, lets you adjust the drawing area, also has pre programmed menus, i.e. there is a space on the top of the tablet that you can click, to launch programs..

The tablet its self is 100% fine, all though they could have moved the buttons from the pen to the left bottom on the tablet.. since pressing buttons while drawing with a pen is never a good idea.. or not drawing for that matter, its like trying to aim a bow, and dance and the same time, just not a good idea!

The pen thickness is a tad thick, it's the size of a marker pen, but it feels ok.. the 2 buttons on the mouse, are rather pointless.. coupled with the not so good pressure tip on the pen.. the pressure is not smooth.. ie from light to dark the gradient is to quick.. like its hard to do accurate shades, because you press a little, to get faint drawing, and press a little more and it dose too much..

I have to congratulate the people who made this on its accuracy of movement with the pen, the movement is very elegant and smooth... you draw, and the curves and lines are wonderful..

Overall, and, despite these little things, This tablet for this price pleased me well, I would buy another no problem, you cannot go wrong.. If you want a tablet look no further..

Drawing with ease

Jan 2, 2003 - By G. O. Purvis (UK)

I recieved the Trust badged version of this tablet for christmas and it installed with the greatest of ease considering the trouble I've seen with other more expensive tablets. For this price I was not too sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. After installing the drivers it was a doddle getting it working with Photoshop (with all of the features working). The pen, though requiring a AAA battery, is light and responsive showing a good degree of control over the cursor. So far I've never used the mouse as I bought an optical mouse just before christmas (the upshot being that I've got a spare battery from those supplied in the box).

A fine alternative to the more expensive tablets for those on a tight budget.

Excellent value for money

Nov 13, 2002 - By Amazon Customer

Having used this tablet for some time now, I have found several positive and negative points. I have found the pen in general use to be responsive, and accurate, and I have thus far been impressed with the drivers and the signature recognition screen saver that are bundled with it (which is a novel feature). However I would say that the handwriting recognition software is of a low standard, and the annotation software is reasonable. If you wish to use this tablet for handwriting recognition I would recommend the use of Office XP`s built in support which I was very impressed with. Also Corel Art Dabbler is a nice introductory package, to natural media art. As far as the mouse goes, I was not so impressed. I found it to be very insensitive, but I believe that this may be a driver issue, and have emiled them about it, and I hope it will be rectified. In reality, these are minor complaints given the price of this item, and spares are readily available from the nisis website (new pen/nibs 10/2 pounds respectively including delivery). Overall I would recommend this pad to anyone looking for a cheap way to input in a more natural manor, but at the moment, I would say stick to your old mouse (which works fine in conjunction with the tablet).

Great tablet for a great price

Jan 23, 2004 - By Eurig Jones

Admittedly I've never owned a tablet before this one, but I'm very pleased with my purchase! It was very easy to install on my Windows XP system and I pretty much got to grips with the pen in half an hour and realised how powerfull it is for graphics.

The tablet comes with a mouse, if you can call it that! For the rest of the mouse-using world this mouse is extremely hard to get to grips with as it uses the tablet as its sensor. (Sounds good until you try it out!!) The mouse also looks and feels like something thats come out of a christmas cracker!

Appart from the mouse this a great utility at a really good price for graphics people.
