Hama Directional Microphone
This is a very solid, well-engineered microphone, which offers excellent value for money. I much appreciated the generous supply of leads that come as part of the package.
The biggest snag, however, is that it is very poor at damping out extraneous vibrations, like those arising from motor noise (when attached to a camcorder) or general bumps and thumps when used in a holder on a table (at a wedding, for instance). I am currently working on ways to insulate the mic from these vibrations, and have confidence that this will be possible, using rubber blocks. Pity this insulation didn't come as part of the original design!

Unfulfilled Expectations
I bought this microphone based on the two previous reviews in order to replace my cheapy £12.50 Jessop's stereo unit. I wish I hadn't bothered. The on/off slider fell out as soon as I got the microphone out of the packaging. Undeterred by such a relatively minor issue, I tried to fit it to the shoe of my camcorder using the adaptor supplied only to find I couldn't tighten it enough before the plastic thread slipped and jumped loose.
If these two faults had been all I could find I wouldn't have minded, but in use it seemed to have have wired up the wrong way round, because it picked up the slightest sound from the right and left, and hardly anything in front. In fact, the opposite of what I wanted. What I did want was a microphone that picked up the sounds immediately in front of it and reduced the background sounds to the right and left.
Of course it could be my fault for misinterpreting the specification, but I don't think so, and at the end of the day I have to speak as I find.
I think I'll stick with my trusty Jessop in the meantime.
