Cheap DVD actually good SHOCK!

(3 out of 5) by Rob Chapman on Aug 27, 2002
Like most new DVD buyers, I was confronted with a mass of differnt specifications and a price range from £80-£300. As a new user, I decided to start off slow and maybe work up to bigger and better models...

The Kiiro X8 was comparatively cheaper than big name brands, which was an initial concern. But it is possible to phone the manufacturer and ask for an extended warranty upon request. Personally, I didn't take up this option but could be useful to others.

After drawing a shortlist of four options, the [...] saving over a BUSH model confirmed that it would be a good starter player (Both our SONY and TOSHIBA options were too expensive for beginners)

AFter a quick delivery we discovered that the instruction booklet was as sparce as unfortunately expected. Although available in over a dozen languages, it was not aimed at new users (ie: this funny shaped one goes here, this round one goes here)

It was not until we asked a friend(after an hour of struggle) that he suggested we purchase a SCART lead to plug into our VCR. The sound was, although not suggested, plugged into our Hi-Fi, giving good sound quality and making the most of the improved sharpness.

When in action the buttons were relatively straightforward. Although not as well endowed with buttons and knobs as other expensive players, it suited our needs exceptionally well. Unfortunately there is little else to remark upon. The quality of image and sound was very good... but a sensible remote control would be a useful addition. Scrolling through menus is no fun when you're looking at additional features.

Overall, I was disappointed with the instructions (without help, we could still be sitting there. And the SCART lead cost an extra £12).

However, for beginners, or those looking for a second DVD player, I would recommed the Kiiro as a suitable and in-expensive option

Value for money, but a little flimsy, I wish I had invested

(2 out of 5) by Mr. A. Aldrich on Oct 13, 2002
Good Points
I thought the amount of features included for the price was good. I like the idea of multi-region and the possibilities of importing DVDs at a more reasonable price and gettin gthem before UK release.

MP3 playback is a nice added feature. Unfortunate that the DVD player has to be plugged into a TV for MP3 selection.

I like the fact that not one but TWO headphone output sockets are provided, each with lots of power, so that's a thoughtful nod towards the hard of hearing.

Bad Points
The Kiiro X8 arriveed with the fascia mostly detached. I don't know if this was a result of mass production or Parcel Force. It gave it a nicely curved front and better ventilation for the components, but the gap was somewhat unsightly.

Analogue audio output is fine but digital output skips the last second or two of output. Buffering problems, perhaps? Kiiro's helpline is only open 9am-5pm and today is a Sunday, so they're not open at all.

I expect that I am just an unlucky customer...

Good player at a great price

The picture quality is perfect. Easily as good as my old Region 1 Sony. Setting the surround sound wasn't that easy though. A better manual would be helpful.

Poor performance

I bought one of these for my daughter's birthday. It worked just great.... for 6 months. Now it just refuses to play. Lesson? Do not buy obscure cheap makes of DVD player. Buy a good brand which will be something more reliable!!!

A nice unit for beginners

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 16, 2002
Like another reviewer, I too had a problem with the front facia not being attached correctly. I was able to snap it back into place, but this didn't give a great impression.

When I plugged it in, however, it seemed pretty easy to use. The remote is solid and comprehensive, and the on screen setup is mostly easy to use. Unforutnately there are a couple of strange settings, that aren't completely documented in the instructions.

Picture quality is great for the price, but can't compete with my Pioneer DV-626. If you look closely you can see pixelisation, and you really need a decent TV with a nice comb filter to get the best out of this unit.

Multi Region works like a charm. I tried many region 1 and region 2 discs on it, including discs with RCE protection. All worked without a hitch, and it's nice to be able to just insert a disc and play it.

All in all, a nice machine for someone new to DVD - but remember: you get what you pay for.
