An Excellent DVD Player

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Sep 17, 2004
The Toshiba SD220 DVD player is the successor to the award winning SD210. This new model has improved looks thanks to the stylish angled fascia, which carries the bulk of the controls.

The unit measures 430x225x69mm. However, it's not just good looks that set this player apart from the competition. Superb image and sound quality was a trademark of the SD210 and this replacement model doesn't disappoint in this department, thanks to the high quality 10-bit video DAC and 24-bit audio processor.

The SD220 has a good array of connections on the back, including SCART socket, composite, component and S-VHS video connections, plus analogue audio and Co-axial and optical digital audio connections. While the latter digital connections can pass Dolby Digital and DTS streams to suitable surround sound decoding equipment, the player also includes Spatialiser technology, to create a virtual surround sound from stereo speakers.

Long term problem

After reading the glowing reviews I bought a Toshiba SD220e in Dec 2002 and until now was very happy with the superb picture and sound quality. A few months ago just out of warranty it started freezing the picture which locked up all controls requiring a power down. At first I blamed it on poor quality rental DVD discs but it also does it with brand new discs. It's now at the point where most most movies lock up and nothing seems to cure it. I am gutted that such a well respected brand name DVD player has packed in after less than 18 months. I have no chance of warranty comeback and repair costs are higher than buying a new machine. So it's a new DVD player for me but never again will it be a Toshiba!

Region 3 will not play.

(1 out of 5) by Stephen H on Aug 3, 2004 (Ireland)
Player once played a region 3 dvd, then a few months later sontaneously refused to play region 3 dvds, even the one it had already played. Sounds crazy, I agree, but another reviewer had other problems with region 3 dvds.

Also the noise made by the player when playing is very audible during quiet scenes.

Very good but lost its multi-region capability

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Apr 23, 2004
Very good player for the money. But the only time I've used its'multiregion' capability (with a Chinese Region 3 disk) the picture soonbecame black & white and stays that way until the player is turned off. Otherwise brilliant.

A GOOD QUALITY CHEAP PLAYER

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Mar 17, 2004
This player has a mid range level of features at a very cheap price. The picture quality is fantastic with no loss of picture even with a scratched disc. The on screen menus are okay but a little small and need getting used to.On zoom function the picture looses some clarity but it's no worse than a more expensive player. The fit and finish is very good and it's a good looking player. The power consumption is the only major floor as is the plug in power cord.I think I would recommend buying the SD330e which has these bugs ironed out though !.
