A cool digital from Nikon?
Having recently purchased the 5000, My first impressions are that, the camera feels good, handles well and is fairly light in weight. The facilities it has is enough to keep anyone busy for some time. And once you have learned the basics everything else is easy. The quality of the lens is typical Nikkor quality, which produces some excellent pictures, However I wish Nikon had given it a greater focal length, my feeling is that I will have to buy a convertor just to get me that greater amount of distance. Two points that I find most dissapointing about this camera is the flash....which is too close to the lens and causes red eye despite in fill flash. (Come on Nikon you should have forseen this problem) The battery life is very dissapointing...again I will need to buy a spare battery. The memory card should have been 64MB as standard.
Overall despite the few drawbacks. The quality of the pictures it has produced are absolutely superb and cannot be faulted. If given the choice again I would still choose this camera over any others, even the Minolta Dimage 7.

Excellent 5mb compact digital
I've owned this camera from new for over a year and i'm always impressed by the practicality and photo quality.
The menu setup takes some getting used to but doesn't take that much effort to learn.
OK the battery doesn't last ages but there small enough to carry another in your bag, along with your memory card.
I've taken lots of different pics from night pics to motor sport and I’ve never been disappointed from what this camera is capable of. Shutter speeds of 4000/sec to 5 mins. Example being I used this at a family wedding and I thought the camera performed better than an expensive digital Cannon SLR.
Nikonview software used for downloading to your PC is very good and real easy to use. Nikon has upgraded this camera to the 5400 model, but I recommend you get hold of this now at a reduced price for a real bargain.

Great camera shame about the flash and close up work.
I won't go on about how good the camera is but here are three negative points:1. The flash sensor is so close to the hand grip that even with a small hand and fingers, I still at times accidentally cover the sensor with my finger! This means the picture will come out looking very dark even thought the flash was activated.2. I do a lot of close up work and find the autofocus has a mind of its own. Also the sharpness is not always as sharpe as I would like it. This is even though I have the camera on a proper copy stand with appropriate lighting. 3. The batteries sucks! (It is even worse with the Nikon Coolpix 3100 ((I only ever managed to get ten shots from each charge!)).
