Lovely birthday present!

(5 out of 5) by Paul on Jul 31, 2002 (uk)
I was given the player as a birthday present, and so far am very happy with it. So far, tested a R2 DVD, VCD and a SVCD and all had no probs.

Only prob i had was on plugging in the scart lead, i got no picture. When i attached the AV wires i got a pic. I browsed the menus and found the output was defaulted to RGB not composite. Once changed, i could use the scart with no problem.

Good player at a good price!

Great but with a little more thought...

I have taken delivery of this, my first, DVD player and am pleased with it....although how pleased, I am still to decide....
I have not experienced the sound problems that some have talked of in their reviews of this machine (apart from music CDs play more loudly than the DVDs I have put in so far), nor have I had to set the player to ENGLISH - everything seemed to be right for my needs.
I literally plugged the mains lead in, and connected the SCART lead to the DVD and the TV. I inserted a disc and it loaded up first time....bit of a relief that I haven't had to make lots of adjustments to the setup.

I have a number of minor problems with it and they have been covered in other reviews.

Firstly, the manual is not the best I've encountered. considering it is a mid-entry level machine it doesn't cover the benefits of each feature At best it tells you what a certain button does, but not why you might benefit from making certain adjustments with it.

Secondly, the remote. There is a lack of one-press SKIP/SEARCH/VOLUME buttons as on most audio and video equipment and selecting any of those features is a pain.
If the central four keypads on the remote could be used for these common features and replace the existing (and less commonly used) uses then a big improvement will have been made.
The fiddly procedure of pressing the MODE button and then (and you need to be quick about it) pressing the + or - keys seems senseless.
My only other observation at present is that there is a bit of 'whirring' noise as discs load up but this appears to dissappear, or maybe I have got into watching the film and forgotten about it.
All in all a pleasant experience for a first-time DVD buyer...

very good value for money - an excellent entry-level DVD

This is my first DVD purchase and it couldn't have been easier. This is a stylish and very slim model. The region-free feature is its best, and the clumsy remore control its worst. Overall, it very good value for money and an excellent entry-level DVD - all you want from a player.

French styling, shaped like a RYVITA; what else do you need. It has just played a region 1 DVD of
"COWBOY BEBOP TV NO2",a Laura Pausini CD & a HAYDN
SYMPHONY all without overemphersised bass:( a failing with most modern systems): I don't need that anymore. It dates back to the old 78 records
when reproduction was awful. It isnt anymore. I just it got today, one & a half days after I ordered it: WOW!. Thanks to H & B,amazon,&Parcel Force.

My Experience of owning the H & B DVD player

(1 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on May 5, 2002
Having overcome my sceptisism, that the product could do all it said it could, i went ahead and ordered it.

However t was delivered without the majority of cables that it was supposed to come with. After two weeks and two packages from Amazon and the Importers/Agents; I finally sat down to enjoy an mp3 CD on a CDRW. I was astounded to find out that one cannot skip backwards and forward between tracks from the remote, you have to enter the number of the song; which the DVD player assigns the song on reading the CD. Further more it makes an annoying noise between tracks, and takes a while to move to the next song. VBR and CBR tracks are also not supported !

I did not get a chance to watch a VCD, as whilst playing the CDRW the machine packed up and refused to work. Many thanks to Amazon though, they have friendly customer service and have refunded my credit card.
