H& B - Value for money and great looks

(5 out of 5) by Amit on Apr 26, 2002 (London, England)
I finally gave in and decided to upgrade my old dvd player which had great picture quality but struggled to play any of the other formats and wasn't multi region...so this H&B fittted the bill perfectly although the name is totally new to me I thought it would be worth the risk...it looks great and the color display is a nice touch...very slim...although quite wide. Bags of features...pretty good picture and the price is simply laughable...you would expect to pay a lot more for something this good. Included in the box was all the cabling - scart and normal cables and batteries. Bargain!

I had two and they both died, my sister is on her second

I bought one of these after reading the reviews and initially had the same problem as another reviewer - sound but no picture.
I sorted this - the scart connector sends S-VIDEO by default, not RGB and my TV expected RGB. This was configurable in the unit, but you needed a picture for the on-screen display. I sorted it by connecting it through my video to my TV, which enabled me to set the scart output to RGB.

It was then fine for a month. In fact I thought it was such good value I bought one for my sister. That turned up dead on arrival, but Amazon were pretty efficient at replacing it for her. She's still got it, touch wood...

Mine died after a couple of months, so sent it back to Amazon. Amazon did replace it immediately. However, my request for the DVD that was stuck in it fell on deaf ears (I obviously didn't want to cause any damageby levering it open before sending it back). Customer service completely ignored this request.

Anyway, I did get another one. Later, I replaced it with a Phillips home cinema system and relegated it to a spare in the playroom. Last time I came to switch it on, guess what - it was dead.

This was less than a year after the replacement was shipped, but I can't be bothered to send it back.

Good, but.........

...looks great, slim, nice remote control which is rare for a budget player. The big minus for me was the dts output, I ran it through a dts amp and the sound skipped and paused, i've read a review on another site complaining about the same. Nice player which will play anything, but if u want to do a true dts surround sound cinema setup, look elsewhere! - Nick D

Excellent

I was a little sceptical about this product as i had not heard of H&b before. However after reading the other reviews, i thought i would chance it.
Have to say i am very pleased with both the picture and sound quality. I'm sure if you pay [more] for a player you may get even better quality but unless you put one side by side you probably won't notice. The set up is very easy and really does take just a few minutes a couple of quick settings changes to the audio and language set up is all that required.
One of the reasons i decided on this product was because it could play all types of discs (no problems so far) and it is also multi regional. However i recently went to purchase a Region one dvd and the site mentioned the disc was 'R.C.E.' apparently this is a new system introduced by sone distributors to prevent multi region players, playing discs for areas they are not intended.

great dvd player

(5 out of 5) by T. percy on Apr 22, 2002
when I got this dvd player I tried every conceivable type of media in it to make sure it read everything it said , and yes it did no problems at all, the picture does not do it justice it looks very smart. the on screen display is very well set out and if you connect it with a scart lead (which was not supplied) its straight up and running just bang your dvd or cd in and sit back and enjoy, very pleased with the purchase
