Sony have surpassed the orignal D-EJ-735 design by adding a CDR/RW playing feature, thus giving you the ability to play your own home-burnt CD's with your preferred mixes away from your PC.
For once sony have come up with a decent set of colours for the hardware, their 'Blue' is a rather pleasant mid-deep blue, not garish or shiny (unlike the previous model's in the electric-green).
Playback features via the new 'stick' style in-line remote control are easy to use.
For people who use the supplied Rechargable batteries you'll be pleased to know that dual-charge-and-play feature using an external 'battery-case' is now standard, so you can recharge your internal batteries from the mains and play using a second external set.
The jog feature allows for a reasonable fast-walking pace, or car/bus journeys without skipping.
A nice piece of equipment which I'm going to keep for a while.
Great bargain with CD Text--if you get another remote for it
The manual warns you off using any other remote control with the unit.
However, I also have a Sony MZ-R900 MD recorder, which comes with the RM-MC11EL remote, which has the same jack plug. If you plug this into the 835, all of its features work--pause, volume, program, even the electro-luminescent backlight. Not only that, the remote displays remaining track time and remaining disc time--and, wait for it--CD Text! It also gets the unit's LCD to display remaining time--something you can't get the unit itself to do!
This is typical Sony--I thought it highly unlikely that they would produce more than one remote controller chip, all they do is limit the buttons on the remote.
So I'm very happy with the unit, but I would've been less than happy if I hadn't had an MD remote. 5 stars for the player (sound quality is great and it even lets you turn off the annoying beeping you get by default with every button press and while paused), 0 stars for Sony for packaging such a useless remote with it.
Best sound but features could be better
The problem is that it uses an external battery compartment to deliver a battery life of 86 Hours so don't get fooled!! The real battery life with 2 alkaline batteries is up to 38 hours, still good..
It also lacks of a Pause button on the remote-controller together with a back-lit.
Overall this product is a high-class one and highly recommended. As said it is different from its predecessors on the ground that it supports CD-R / CD WR compatibility.
Yes, Buy it!!!
